Depends.....

Most go north-about oz then west but a small minority ( one a year?) choose to go east via Chile and the South Atlantic.

Depends what you want to see on the way.....

Depends on whether your a hopper or get a buzz out of a long run..
NZ then East following the currents and winds toward S America then curve N with them and head for Panama.. its a long run but you'll get there a lot quicker..

I've done 7/8ths of it over the years... Aus-NZ-Chile and Pto Montt/Iquique... I know others who have done Pto Montt up to Ecuador but then they have hung a left and headed to Tahiti.....as I did from Anto.

From Ecuador to Panama is only another 5 or 600 miles....

Don't think I would want to do it non stop from Oz...

No I've not but every things favourable wind and current direction and if I had a delivery I'd seriously consider it.. depending if the owner was up for it.
From N Island its around 7Knm.. so roughly 7-8 weeks in a 40+ftr to Ecuador.. then up to Panama and through..
Would not do it in a 22ftr tho'..

Jeff Hartjoy did that trip ( as far as Ecuador ) last year as part of a solo circumnavigation. Latitude 38 - 'Lectronic Latitude
His logs are out there somewhere.

He turned left well before South America and sailed up throught the SE Pacific High which he found rather hard work.

Better in my opinion to head for Valdivia, refresh yourself and head up the coast from there... nice southerlies reinforced with the afternoon sea breeze.... bliss.... one of the most pleasant passages I have ever done.

Where in the Carib are you wanting to head? Panama to the Eastern Carib is a real bear.

Just a hypothetical trip at this point if I were to get something built in Australia or Vietnam. Would probably spend some time in Malaysia, then move toward the Caribbean. I know that I don't want to go near Somalia...

Or some go over the top SE Asia - Japan - US and then south to the Canal.

Longest leg is less than 5000 NM.

That is one reason I sold my L450 in Australia and I am now looking for a replacement in the Med. Circumnavigation against the trades is just too hard and no fun at all. We plan to go the other way around. Med - Carib - Pacific - Australia.

The alternative Aus - Asia - Indian Ocean - Africa - Suez - Med -Carib did not seem to be a good idea and taking the long way around the cape was not our cup of tea either.
