Extra sails with my new boat... what to do?

I unbagged my extra sails today.
A couple of them are rather musty smelling... like the boat was.
As you can see from the pics... they look decent, one needs some attention for sure, but I looked over all the stitching and didn't see anything amiss other than that one ripped section on the Johnson Sails sail.
.
Being a newbie to sailboat ownership... I have no idea if sails with an unknown history should be sent out for professional inspection and service?
The PO didn't give me any information as to the history of these sails, so I don't even know if they're properly sized for my boat.

I know there are ways to figure that out... you can tell me or I can search my books and the internet.

I didnt' measure the spinnaker, but I did measure the other two...
.
Johnson Sails
Luff - 25' 7"... 307"
Leech - 33' 4"... 400"
Foot - 10' 5"...126".

Windjammer Radial R&R
Luff - 34' 6"... 414"
Leech - 31' 7"...379"
Foot - 17' 4"...208"

Re: Extra sails with my new boat... what to do?

I would sew the tabling back on and keep it for a backup main, assuming it actually fits the boat and isn't some random extra sail, probably want to check that.

If you get really ambitious sew the perimeter of the patches too.

The head board is showing wear.

This is the sail you keep around to get you home if the regular main blows up or to give to some poor soul worse off than you when cruising in the middle of nowhere or to use for patch material on something.

THANKS!
Yeah... with the machine I have at home... sewing that one open spot shouldn't be any trouble.
Luckily the patches are in a place I can probably gather material up and get it under arm of my machine to do the perimeter of those as well.

The wear on the plate somewhat concerns me.
Not sure what the typical recommendation is for the amount of rounding out that can take before it's time to replace it.

Re: Extra sails with my new boat... what to do?

The Windjammer looks like a lapper or genoa. No obvious defects.

The Spin depends on what you want to do with the boat. If you are going to race it doesn't look bad.

If you are going to cruise short-handed, say a couple, it probably won't get much use. spinnakers are high effort sails and cruising is in endurance sport. You might use it in really light wind, but want to be sure to take it down as soon as the wind builds some.

If you are going to cruise with 3 or 4 aboard, no problem, just don't fly it at night unless it is really light.

Re: Extra sails with my new boat... what to do?

And in case it helps or is useful in any way...
Spec's from Sailboat Data for my boat...
I have a main and jib on it now... not sure about anything concerning them other than we hoisted the main and unfurled the jib when I was inspecting the boat for the purchase.
From that limited vantage point, they both looked good to my eye.

I was thinking of taking the 2 off the boat at some point, washing them, doing a more detailed inspection, and repairing or sending for repair if needed.

Any suggestions on Sailmakers on the West Coast from say... San Francisco up to Portland?

Thanks again!
.
As per my intentions with the boat... they're strictly honorable... I assure you!
.
This year, I'll be sailing in Humboldt Bay, which isn't much room so I'm told.
IF I race... it might be the beer can races on Weds nights... but I'll be crewing for others a few times before I take my boat out.
.
At some point... likely next year or so... I will hopefully head out over the bar and do a little... a serious little... bit of coastal sailing until I know the boat and the captain (me) can handle it!
I'm thinking I'll be single-handing it mostly... taking on a small crew when I can find someone to go with me.

Honorable, really?!? What kind of sap do you take me for. You're a sailor, of course your intentions are shady at best.

Re: Extra sails with my new boat... what to do?

Before you do any work on sails you found on your boat, make sure they fit.
Unless you are much better at measuring boats and sails than any sailmaker, the most reliable way to check is to put it on the boat.
Boats vary, even identical model boats. I bought a used sail which looked new, made by sailmakers for there own use so they could race a borrowed boat. Fit their boat perfectly. I had a different furling setup I guess, and it ended up too long in the luff. I have had acceptable size sail with wrong slugs. One was too small, got changed, one too large, got sanded.
Put the sails on the boat before you decide to do ANY work. Not hard at all.

Numerous problems are best discovered at the dock.
