New Sails/Old Sails

First off thanks for any help you can give, as this is my first post.

I am a new dad and trying to keep the boat afloat as they say I am currently weighing the option between servicing older sails vs buying new from the sail warehouse, they seem cheeper than the big names but thats usually an indication of quality. I'm wondering if anyone has had any experience with them buying a basic offshore cruising sail, just dacron not carbon or anything fancy like that. I just need the basics and would like to buy the heavier option for the long term benefits.

Welcome aboard.

There is another option. If your old sails are really shot you can find out for yourself: take a No. 2 pencil with a point on it and try to push it through the cloth; if it penetrates, the cloth is not worth servicing. If you're located in the States, you can fairly easily have serviceable second hand sails shipped to you, to tide you over till you can afford new ones.
