Looks like it's only sunk once or twice! I usually buy fixer uppers myself but you are a brave man in my eyes sir! Please make sure that your bulkheads and chain plates are sound. That far discoloring in the finish is a troubling sign. Good luck with your new boat and the work ahead. Take lots of pictures and keeps us posted on the progress.

Trash don't matter, it's what's underneath the trash is what counts.

Re: My derelict boat

Since we now know that PO saved a few grand on the disposal costs at least someone got a great deal here.

But if you tell us the make, model and the age of this, uhmmm, vessel, perhaps we can discern if it is worth saving. My own preliminary look would say that it would even be rejected at the junk yard as not being up to their standards for acceptaqnce.

Re: My derelict boat

spend $500 and get a survey....It will be money well spent, whether it tells you what needs to be replaced or upgraded, or the surveryer tells you to save your money and not put any more money into it...

I bought a relly old well used but well cared for (mechanically speaking) boat for $7500, I have put a lot of money into upgrading it a little at a time, but the boat itself is SOLID SOLID SOLID....systems not withstanding the surveyor hadn't seen a boat in as good condition as it was for it's age...that's a boat worth putting money into if you'll use it.

forget resale value, there is no such thing as retaining value in a boat, so get over the idea of flipping it. By the time you have restored everything you'll be lucky to get half of what you put into it.

Learn to fix stuff on your own....everything, from doing rigging, electrical work (learn the right way to do it), and engine maintenance and repair...paying a mechanic is a huge unnecessary bill...I said HUGE.

Re: My derelict boat

ok thanks for the responses
yeah i paid next to nothing for her, cost me $500 and a bottle of rum ,
its a 30 foot C&C redwing ,(hull number one ) , named the berolina made in 1967
it was very well maintained up until 4 years ago , when it slowly turned into a crash pad for a french kid who was working as a marine technician at the nearby boat yard , he was working 80 hours a week and didn't have time to fix the boat he was living on , but he left me all the bells and whistles that he pulled off the boats he was working on , these pictures are from 2 months ago , and when i got her she had 3 feet of water inside , from a deck leak , ( which i'm going to fiberglass when the weather allows ) the chain plates and rigging are sound , structurally shes a very well built and sturdy boat , 7 keel bolts , all in good condition , she has a 20 horse power inboard yanmar diesel ( that was an upgrade from the 90s ) either with a blown head gasket or a seized impeller / cooling system ( from what iv heard ) .... she looks like **** right now but she ain't no catalina ;P

Re: My derelict boat

your boat has potential. you chose her.
oops.
all derelicts are pricy to fix unless you are able to do the work yourself of have someone who does not practice wallet rape.

when you are finished she will be a good boat.
with a derelict there are 2 things possible--whine and cry or repair and win.
have fun

Masou,
Based on your pix, I would value the boat at zero with little or no chance to restore it to sound, working condition based on real time and money invested to achieve your goal. The circumstances of its past are irrelevant other than that the water inside is critical to its soundness/structure and a blown engine is far too costly to repair based upon a 40 plus year old boat with little, if any, real value. If this is not a joke, you paid $500. too much and the rum could have been far better used than as a gift to the "seller". Finally, to disparage Catalina sailboats as a final thought in your post is both rude( in my opinion) and unfair to many Catalina owners on this Forum . . . especially in light of your recent purchase. Good luck . . . you'll need plenty of it!
