Re: Seacock warning, probably most relevant to Australians
Yep, I bet that’s brass, while the housing, which looks good, is bronze. This is why I keep mentioning to not choose valves that use brass parts. I wish if people only remember one thing that this is... |

And turning the valve with a big wrench without holding the skin fitting! |

Re: Seacock warning, probably most relevant to Australians
The failures related to engines breaking free come from the attached water hose, not impact from the engine. The exhaust and water hoses are what hold the engine. One of the best kept secret upgrades... |

Re: Seacock warning, probably most relevant to Australians
Except that one does not drill any extra holes in their hull for flanged adapters or seacocks. Actually reading MarineHowTo articles that are so important is helpful to at least understand the point... |

Re: Seacock warning, probably most relevant to Australians
Brass is an alloy of copper and zinc. Just like with sacrificial anodes, the zinc molecules in the alloy sacrifice themselves, leaving a Swiss cheese like copper material that is bound to fail. ... |

Re: Seacock warning, probably most relevant to Australians
The SBV flanged valve is all bronze and stainless. The IBV in-line valve is supposed to go on the flanged adapter (which is all bronze) and I think they put a chromed solid brass ball in to make it... |

Re: Seacock warning, probably most relevant to Australians
I think you’re right. This is why I push for the flanged seacocks and flanged adapters. People do not realize the importance, they spend thousands on sail handling systems on boats with just one... |

Re: Seacock warning, probably most relevant to Australians
If it’s brass then you found the problem. The best ones like a flanged seacock from Groco are bronze with a stainless steel ball and shaft. To save money, the valves that go on top of their flanged... |

Re: Seacock warning, probably most relevant to Australians
I don’t know the valve you used but it’s looking good because it is designed with the hose going up vertical so one can’t step on it. When you replace the skin fitting then you could use a flanged... |

Re: Seacock warning, probably most relevant to Australians
It is, as are their flanged seacocks and those from Apollo. I don’t understand why people would argue against that but am pretty sure it is because they don’t have it and can’t live with the idea... |

Re: Seacock warning, probably most relevant to Australians
Brass handles are just not up to the task, no plating can change that. Nobody said that galvanized steel is better; the top valves have stainless steel handles. In fact, your Maestrini valves have... |

Re: Seacock warning, probably most relevant to Australians
Because nickel doesn’t hold up well, nor does brass. The handle should have been bronze or stainless steel, like you wrote and thought it was. Apollo and Groco are the leaders today. WC was top of... |

Re: Seacock warning, probably most relevant to Australians
Okay now we established that, let me show you the evidence  the wall thickness of the threaded neck of the flanged adapter is double that of the skin fitting. This means it is 4 times as... |

Re: Seacock warning, probably most relevant to Australians
What you are saying is that the threaded neck is the same. What those who actually handled these are saying is that the threaded neck is very different; much, much stronger. Unless you have first... |

Re: Seacock warning, probably most relevant to Australians
You’re now stuck in repeating something that is wrong. Everyone who handled these knows that and I guess you will need to have one in your own hands before you believe it because regardless of how... |

Re: Seacock warning, probably most relevant to Australians
Did not find the test on Rod Collins’ YT channel. But the test of a bronze skin fitting + valve failed immediately at 400 pounds while the same setup in Marelon failed at 200 pounds. Both fail ABYC... |

Re: Seacock warning, probably most relevant to Australians
The test shows the skin fitting breaking. This happens every time, like I wrote. Now you have an open hole to close. The tapered threaded stud on a flanged adapter is much, much stronger than a... |

Re: Seacock warning, probably most relevant to Australians
Sorry but no it’s not. The flanged adapter is many times as strong as a skin fitting with nut. If you step on the hose which is attached to a flanged seacock or a flanged adapter, then this will not... |

Re: Seacock warning, probably most relevant to Australians
The problem comes when the valve is screwed on top, then a 90 degree hose barb fitting and the hose attached. Stepping on that puts enough force on the skin fitting to leak or break. Mainsail has... |

Re: Seacock warning, probably most relevant to Australians
You can use stainless steel with mica insulation. The Groco flanged adapters, skin fittings and ball valves are all available in stainless steel. |
