re: Galley refit on 27' sailboat?

In my experience very few owner modified boats look or function as well as originally designed and built. Many are never quite finished, or done quite right. And most, I would say, devalue the boat....

Re: Origo 6000 alcohol oven, building/design one yourself?

There are three Origo 6000's on eBay in the US right now, including a brand new never used one. Two on the west coast and one in NY. $1750 to $2000. Plus shipping.
It would not surprise me if there...

Re: Transom painted with Diver Down Flag

I would treat it the same way I treat cars displaying dive flag decals. Ignore it.

Re: Hole in motor behind starter on Volvo Penta MD22L

I'm not so sure this would have been caused by a Bendix or drive pinion failure. The whole purpose of that housing is to contain such failures.
I think it more likely that the engine was dropped...

Re: Origo 3000 out of control

There is only one way this is happening; you are refilling the canisters while they are in place in the stove. Because that's the easiest thing to do. And you are overfilling them. Alcohol is...

Re: Health Care & Diabetes

Your doctor doesn’t know anything about diabetes that every other doctor in the world doesn’t know. He won’t talk to you on the phone because he can’t bill your insurance for that.
He is obviously...

Re: North from the Bahamas

People often equate proximity to land with safety, when just the opposite is true.

In the middle of the Gulf Stream there are no bridges or bridge schedules, tidal schedules, nor schedules of any...

Re: Is a dinghy a necessity for the ICW?

Something I just remembered about getting a kedge out... I swam one out once. My big heavy inflatable was stowed on deck. I was alone. Just didn't want to bother hoisting it off and back on....

Alaskaflyfish,

I must have missed the part where you explained who did it, why, from where, and how.
I also missed the evidence you must have mentioned somewhere. And your own programming/hacker...

Re: I Don't Mean to Sound Uncharitable, But...

It's pointless to pontificate too specifically from this distance. And certainly I am no trained marine accident investigator. Except in my own mind, of course, where I pretty much know everything...

Re: Is a dinghy a necessity for the ICW?

My vote would be no. handy to have? Sure. But you have a small boat. Compromises must be made. It will constantly be in the way and a general pia.
You can motor right up to any dock and sail up to...

Re: I Don't Mean to Sound Uncharitable, But...

All three of those navy ships were struck from the side. So they apparently put themselves into the path of the ships that struck them.
Considering the relative lack of maneuverability of container...

You won't do it. And neither would I when I was you. But before long you'll wish you had! lol

Put the plastic pieces back on, well bedded and with slightly larger screws, and paint them! Burn the...

Re: Can someone talk me off the ledge?

Trentepieds has a good point. Depending on just how big those teak pieces are, they may be exerting enough force trying to return to their natural shape to be pulling your screws out. Teak can be...

Re: Can someone talk me off the ledge?

I assumed your screws were going through the toe rail and down into the deck. What carl is describing sounds like his toe rail was screwed through holes in the inner liner then the deck and then...

Re: Can someone talk me off the ledge?

as mentioned above you must first drill the teak larger than the outside diameter of the screw threads. Actually, you should be using a screw with an unthreaded shank that is as long as the thickness...

You already know what you want to do.

The only way you can screw this up is to pay too much for whatever you buy and/or spend too much on it. And even then, it's only money, right? lol

Re: Family of 4 in a Small Liveaboard, Courting Disaster?

Sounds totally doable. But depends on your family dynamic.

If you can teach the wife and kids to help work on the boat (or all learn together), not be too critical or demanding of perfection or...
