Re: Annapolis Saillboat Show (monohull thoughts)

Outbound was there and the dodger looks great.

Not completely sold on the open transom / no bridge deck thing but otherwise my favorite boat at the show.

Re: Ground Tackle Purchase Plan - Opinions Sought

Chesapeake Bay / East Coast sailing with no windlass:

I would buy a 33lb lewmar claw, 20-30' 5/16" G3 chain, and invest the rest of your money.

If in 5 years you really do set off to cross...

Re: Advice for mounting 800W of solar panels?

Completely agree the only way to go is a welded arch (316 stainless or aluminum). Added benefit is a place to add a radar or davits (not great with a pointy stern but beats having it stolen).

Re: What Cordage for Sheets?

I am going to disagree with the pack and say go for a mid/high-tech line. E.g. Samson MLX. You can go down from 5/8" (16mm) to 1/2" (12mm) so the cost won't be too much more.

Re: Whisker pole questions

^^ Exactly. I like a single, non-adjustable J + a foot or two, spin pole.

Works pretty good. Won't break.

Re: 3M 5200 to fix dinghy?

It will work. Will work better if you clean surface with toulene (or acetone if that's what's available). Hard part is keeping parts together until it dries.

That said if it was mine and I was...

Re: Pipe Dope Instead of Teflon Tape

Pipe dope is the way to go but it is extremely easy to make a mess.

Re: Routing Running Rigging?

Great comments above. I agree with Uncivilized - I prefer halyards and reefing lines to be at the mast rather than needing to be in two places at once.

Re: 5/16 HT or 3/8 HT Chain?

There are trade offs for everything and could argue either way. But to answer your question, 5/16" HT is strong enough. I used the same on my 42' 30K+ boat (w/ 55lb rocna)

Pur Powersurvivor 35

Have a Pur Powersurvivor 35 watermaker for sale. Has sat in my basement for 5 years and have decided to go without a watermaker. The membrane is almost certainly bad now, but in good condition...

Re: Time At Sea - What Counts?

It's 4 hours (not 8) but you must be underway. So being anchored or in a slip doesn't count.

Taking your own boat out fishing does.

Re: Coastguard rescues 3

First, fantastic job by the Coast Guard. I am very impressed by the rescue first, ask questions later mindset should I ever need it.

That does look pretty darn rough for the Bay, but it was well...

Re: Annapolis Sailboat Show Review

They actually had two. The Allures 45, and the Garcia 45 Expedition (Jimmy Cornell's boat). They were across from the 90' Turkish yacht.

The Expedition 45 is a pilot house and you're right, I had...

Re: Vertical capstan windlass

Hud3 has it right. While a little pricier, I would buy a Maxwell if I was buying today.

For your boat 5/16" HT (G4) and a 20kg anchor (44lb Rocna) sound good for serious cruising. 150' of chain...

re: Man tries to run to Bermuda in a bubble?

See that's the problem with this go now go cheap mantra. If only he'd had a true bluewater hamster ball with lots of teak he would've been fine.

Re: Alternative Anchor Hauling Method

I should have expanded more earlier. Basically you're proposing a really, really long snubber. And it would probably work most of the time. A shorter snubber you can keep off the seafloor which...

They are going to get horribly twisted together every time the tide or wind changes.
