Re: What is Your Favorite Quote?

Having been at this boat building caper for some time now, I relate to:

Re: HH 44 hull #1 Sea Trials

Yes that happens with electric motor controllers that do not keep the prop(s) spinning while in regeneration mode, at the minimum rpm to keep them open. Oceanvolt being an exception.

The prop...

Re: Slowing down for sea state

Are you talking about those windspeeds in a passing weather front situation for an hour or so, or passage making under sustained wind system with associated sea state? Thirty kts of wind, upwind, is...

Re: Solo Sailor In Distress

There are old sailors and bold sailors, but precious few old bold sailors. Perhaps there's a seamanship lesson here?

Re: Rudder alignment problem on catamaran

Is it possible the rudder stock is not securely connected to the steering quadrant, so the rudders pivot independently of the quadrant position?
Check that the grub screws or whatever clamps down...

Re: Teamo BackTow PFD

Our purchasing experience in Australia was atrocious. Completely lacking communication on the part of the dealer, and it took over 4 months to finally get them, and the colour was wrong. I hope you...

Re: Alexseal Paint

I had every intention to use Alexseal on our new 50' cat here in Thailand after spraying our hardtop as a "test" and we really liked using it and the result, BUT but the price went up to over USD 800...

Re: My ground tackle refit

Just a quick note on marking your chain. I don't think any paint holds up so we use coloured epoxy. Use a tough non- brittle epoxy and after mixing with the hardener, add just a few drops of acrylic...

Re: Jotun Penguard HB as topcoat finish primer

Sorry, did not see your post about using Hardtop AS. Did you mean AX? Jotun Thailand recommend Hardtop AX as the highest gloss option. Our build is in Thailand, near Sattahip.

Re: Strongest materials for cored panel re-enforcements

That's true. At some point there will be a crossover between material density and thread depth.

Alas there are several ATL products that are not imported into Thailand. You have to be a bit...

Re: Strongest materials for cored panel re-enforcements

If I could get G10 here in Thailand, I may have used that. We made our own G10 backing plates in a clamp press, and use that wherever possible, and also as a tapping plate.

In effect, the decored...

Strongest materials for cored panel re-enforcements

For installing hardware on decks & cabintop, I wanted to test which techniques and materials would provide the strongest attachments of stanchion bases, padeyes, sailtracks, winches, clutches,...

Re: Why even bother with a plotter when you can get this!

Mike, now go look at the Slate Is. with Bing instead of Google satellite. The power of satellite images is that when one image is pretty average, another may be far superior in resolution, colour...

Re: Correct way to Tab bulkheads

FWIW we used Crestomer 1152 & 1153 from Scott Bader after extensive research and sample testing in our custom catamaran build. We used it judiciously in specific use cases for load absorption where a...

Re: hull side sanding progression suggestions after a bout with 40 grit

Firstly, 545 is not a high build primer, it is a finish primer. By the time you would put on a finish primer, your hull is already fair, so.....
Secondly, why would you be "still sanding down to the...

Re: hull side sanding progression suggestions after a bout with 40 grit

Jotun Penguard HB will certainly fill 40 grit scratches. One coat can be sprayed up to 0.25mm DFT with no worries. It sands well to 320 and topcoat can go directly over it.

We used powdered...

Re: Paint Specification - Is Theoretical Coverage At Film Thickness?

And I can confirm that we got very close to the Alexseal coverage estimates for both their finish primer and topcoat. But our WFT was slightly heavier due to environmental conditions. Very forgiving...

Re: Jotun Penguard HB as topcoat finish primer

Not alot of feedback on this one, I guess I'm pioneering again.:whistling:

Jotun Penguard HB as topcoat finish primer

Has anyone any experience using Jotun HB as the primer before spray painting with one of the marine 2 part polyurethanes?

Surely someone has thought of that, given the extortionate pricing of the...

Re: Laminate Sail reviews - offshore cruising use

Good feedback, but I wouldn't expect much of a mildew problem sailing where you are and higher latitudes. The mildew issue will raise its ugly head in the constant high humidity of the tropics, ditto...

Following, and I hope to see some replies.

I'm also considering membrane sails with GPL Liteskin, but the mildew in the tropics worries me. Not so much the looks because we would choose grey...

Re: Composite Chainplates or External Stainless Chainplates?

I think you might be under estimating the sheer strength of the DB foundation layer if you vacuum bag it with the right resin, and cloth to resin fill ratio, and cross hatch sand the epoxy with 40...
