Re: At what point does a boat start to get too big? (family, kids, maintenance concer

How much help will you get from your crew? I need to be able to carry my largest sail by myself. Couldn’t do that on something the size you ate talking about. Also be sensitive to operating and...

Re: Home made sound enclosure

We have a Kohler 5kw diesel gen. I built a three sided box around it and it works well. I used 2x2s for the frame of each side. Then used frp sheeting like shower wall panels with Soundown foam. I...

Re: Yanmar 4 cylinders 54 hp

I have a computer controlled 4JH57. It requires fuel to not be hot. However, excess fuel is used to cool the injectors and returns to the tank. If your tank is low, or like mine the return is near...

Re: Diesel in my bilge after filling tank?

We used to have an ‘82 Catalina 30. The fuel fill hose had a low spot before the tank so fuel always sat there and finally rotted the hose. Depending how long your hose etc it can seem like a lot of...

Re: The bottom line on inflatable dinghies

We really need to know your intended use of the dinghy, short or long runs, open or protected water, number of occupants, etc. We cruise the Bahamas and therefore prefer something that can plane, ie...

Re: Hurricane Michael, Which Way to Run?

Your best bet is to run to the closest place that you can haul out! Remove windage, fill tanks, then get yourself to somewhere safe.

Re: I-65 to BVI from Turks - Caicos

Firstly I have never done either, but hope to one day and have read extensively. One article from a major sailing mag a few years ago suggested that the best southern approach would be to cross to...

Re: Help me hang my dinghy on my davits

First I never leave the motor on when I head out, way too much weight to get swinging. As another post mentioned, rain water can add a surprising amount of weight.

Next, I have a line with a snap...

Re: Breaking Out a Kedge Using the Dinghy

As when towing a boat with a dinghy, go in reverse with the line over the bow. Otherwise the dinghy wants to spin and the force is not applied.

Re: Beneteau 411 - Polar Charts

There is a Beneteau 411 group on Facebook that has a number of files posted that may be useful, though I don't recall polars.

Re: Dinghy engine covers - what are they good for?

I have straps for hoisting the engine. The sun is slowly destroying them, but they are not easily removed and refitted. A cover would be simpler to remove and would prevent or reduce the chances of a...

Re: 1st time on a boat, whats up with all this moisture?

We have the issue too, especially if we are off the boat for awhile. Regarding dehumidifiers, should they drain to the bilge pump or into a sink with an open through-hull while we are off the boat?

Re: Delorme InReach Model Differences

Other vendors have it on sale too, I'm guessing new Garmin version is on the way, but a marine version sounds better. I read the Explorer was technically better, RAM or something. Has anyone used...

Re: Average cost of owning formula

I would agree that the cost of maintenance probably averages 10%, when buying though, I'd add 25% to fix what they survey misses and refit as you see appropriate the first year.

Re: Feline with experience now gets seasick

We had a similar problem. Our solution was effectively a thunder shirt. We have wrap-around fabric and Velcro harnesses that comfort our cats. It seems to be stress related instead of seasickness,...

Re: Film On Water From Diesel Exhaust

You can discuss this with a diesel mechanic, but the engines are actually designed in such a way that they must pass some diesel through. The bigger the engine, the more you would see, especially at...

Re: What the heck are these?

Just a couple thoughts:

If you buy a boat with air conditioning, don't expect to run it unless you are at the dock or are running a generator. They take too much power, hence the vents and fans.

First off, I have never chartered in the USVI, however I have chartered in the BVI many times. I have flown into STT about half the time and ferried over. We love the BVI, and would definitely say it...

Re: A sextant for the 21st century?

With things like Google Sky Map for smart phones, I don't see why a non-GPS location app could not be relatively easily developed. It probably could do the angles itself. As to why we might need it,...

Re: What do YOU think is the best charging option?

Lots of good advice here. One thing to keep in mind regarding the Honda is to be wary of exhaust fumes. Using it in a protected cove may be very different from out at sea. Reserve as much fuel for...
