Dogs arriving in Hawaii by boat

Can anyone tell me about the issues one might find when arriving in Hawaii with a dog on board?

It may have changed over the years, but the last time we sailed there in the 90s, it was a BIG PITA to have dogs aboard! required boarding them for a LONG time! don't remember how long ya had to board them but we left and went to the Marinanas ! much easier there LOL and good ancorages, and Marinas. Nice folks and good food and lots of good bread and veggies! Never really cared for cruiseing in Hawaii, few places to anchor and high prices for everything !! Just our 2 cents

We arrived with our dog four years ago into kona. We had to board her for four months, fortunately at a private vet vs the cages in Honolulu-they gave her a little more freedom. However, there is a new rabbis test u can get done prior to arrival that will reduce the quar time to about 4 days. I can't remember how long it takes before the test is valid but it seemed like 4-6 weeks if my memory serves. We didn't have the option to have this done before arrival but hope u can. Cost of quar was several thousand dollars and we heard the regular quar doesn't even allow them out of cages for the entire time. We got lucky on that part.

A little off topic, but what happens if you arrive in a place where there's a requirement like this and you don't want to subject your 4 legged family member to this? Can you turn around and leave?

You can leave, fly the pet out ( about the same price as a person for a dog) or do quar. Hawaii and Aus. Are the strictest. We've been out 8 yrs and 40 some odd countries and most just say keep em on board but usually ok to take in. Most places our black lab was well received! In Galapagos we were told to keep her below( something about penguins?) everywhere else was fine taking her ashore.

ka lunk has yet to growl although has beeen making threats to resume full voice. seems injectorially compromised, so the beastie's doctor of fluids wiill be inspecting these important bits for cleaning and possible rebuilding.

if threatened with quarantine of bubba, yes we would turn around and get the hellout. he has no reason to be removed from boat for whim of bureaucrats.
he never leaves boat, and his rabies titre was done when we left 3 1/2 yrs ago nd had a 3 yr inocculation given within days of departure.
titre will be done again soon as we get to sympathetic knows bubba vet so we can have it drawn and run again. i have disallowed his visits with the raccoon that comes a calling on some nights.....gets his attention biiig time..... he WANTS that critter....
we have 2 vet friends we can take him to without his abject fear kicking in...
