We are living aboard a Hunter 410, currently in Juneau Alaska. We spent a couple of days at the dock in Auke Bay. Yesterday we headed out for a couple days of fishing. At 4:00 this morning our cat made a giant ruckus in the cockpit. My wife heard it before me, and by the time I got up, all the lights were on and my wife, and our cat were in the forward bedroom along with a dead weasel. The cat was proudly looking on and my wife was going to rescue the weasel. I told her not to touch it, (they can run their teeth like a sewing machine) and started looking for something to hit it with to make sure it was dead. While I was thinking, the weasel came back to life and darted down a small hole behind the front head. Soooo... Now we have a dead/alive weasel under the floor in an EXTREMELY difficult place to access. Any ideas about how to get the little bugger out, dead or alive???

Put the cat in a kitty box or crib or carrier. Preferably off the boat, temporarily.

Put some food (a piece of fish) in a live trap (have a heart type), in the saloon.

Catch the weasel without killing it. .

Then release the weasel on Shore after you catch it.

The trap costs $15 at Walmart.com

Wet cat food, chicken, or eggs are the reccommended bait for weasels. Just hope it doesn't crawl into an inaccessible corner in the bilge and dies. I find it hard to believe any domestic cat got the better of a weasel.

Sell the boat quick. Don't tell the buyer about the weasel.

Believe me, that thought has crossed our minds. Right now the door to the front head is shut and there is a tasty dish of wet cat food on the floor for him. We're anxious the some be missing in the morning. That might give us a chance to trap it and not have to tear the boat apart.

My wife said there was a bunch of heavy action in the cockpit before he entered with the weasel in his mouth. He's a big cat though. 16 lbs and used to catching wild rabbits and squirrels They ain't no weasel though

I don't think a wounded animal will be very interested in the food , at least for a good few days until starvation overcomes the unjury and the fear

Thanks. I needed that after sweating hurricane prep that last few days a little chuckle was needed.

Speaking of hurricane, how the heck are you doing? Still in Miami?

Okay, okay, okay... we genuinely do feel for your situation. But that's the funniest thing I've read today!

Seriously, good luck with getting it out of there. As others have said, it might not poke it's head out for a couple of days until it's really hungry but you've already got a decent plan. Let us know how it turns out.

dry ice would tend to make lower extremities of a boat unpleasant to live in... I've just spent a year dealing with chipmunks in one of my walls. i was getting ready to burn the house down. sorry if that sounds callous but i don't/wouldn't want any dying/rabid animals on/in my abode.
