I assume you didn't mention the standard grains since they are pretty much obvious but just in case:

wheat
barley
oats
buckwheat

And then almost any dried peas, beans and legumes:

pigeon peas
blackeyed peas
mung beans
lentils
etc.

I didn't realize that you could sprout all of these! Thanks for the info! They are quite expensive at the coop and I want to start experimenting before we start cruising so Thanks!

A little beyond a sprout but something very good is garlic before it forms into cloves. The stalks (name?? - the above-ground green part) are like a mild, garlicky chive, excellent both cooked and raw. The bulb is more of a bulbous root at that stage, and you just chop it up - mild and no skins! Try growing some in a hanging basket in your cockpit.

I have not tried sprouting anything since moving aboard because mold has been a problem on my boat - anything damp gets moldy within a day or two. How does everybody prevent mold from growing on their sprouts?

LOL! But we seem to have a hard time keeping them in the jar with the screen on the front.

And they stick around for more than three days and start to taste bad....

what ones did you all like. I tried several and did not care for the taste. do you cook into other foods, eat raw? I bought a large assortment but have not tried them all.

For mold-soak and rinse daily and keep jars (I have always used simple canning jars with plastic screen and a rubber band instead of the screw tops) in a rack with the screen side down to let excess moisture out and air in. Might have to soak and rinse more often in heat to keep the seed from drying out. The key to good taste is good wash and stagger batches so they don't sit around and rot. The seed itself only has enough nutrients to get the thing sprouted then soil is supposed to be there if it's to have a chance. So don't let them start dieing or they'll start tasting like they are!

This is old-ish news, but I only came across it the other day: Apparently broccoli sprouts can have a beneficial effect in reducing a bacteria that contributes to stomach ulcers, IBS, and stomach cancer.

I like sprouts to begin with . . . now a good reason to add some broc to the mix.

Broccoli Sprouts Good for the Gut

"A new study shows that eating 2 1/2 ounces of three-day-old broccoli sprouts every day for at least two months may offer at least some protection against the bacterium Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori), one of the most common bacterial infections in the world. Researchers say it’s the first study to show a beneficial effect of broccoli sprouts on a bacterial infection behind stomach cancer.
Broccoli sprouts are much higher than mature broccoli heads in delivering a biochemical called sulforaphane, which has previously been shown to have potentially anticancer effects. The compound appears to work by triggering the body, especially the gastrointestinal tract, to produce enzymes that protect against damage-causing chemicals and inflammation."
