My favourite 'toastie' is......

The 'original' toastie was invented by the Australian manufacturer, Breville, who first devised the filled-toasted-sandwich-maker.

Previously, sandwich toasters were of the 'cafe' variety, with flat steel plates that slid down rods and were pressed upon to flatten and toast the sandwich.

In Oz, 'toasties' are called "brevilles" - the maker's name becoming a generic (like coke for any cola drink).

So never mind whether you use a Breville, a hot pan, a griddle or some other method, what's your favourite 'toastie'....????

I have three:

1) Baked beans - truly 'nuclear furnace' if you bite into one too soon

2) Vegemite and cheddar cheese

3) Sardines and tomato sauce - sounds weird but is surprisingly tasty; add seasonings of your choice: pepper, salt, chilli.....

Cheese and just about anything!

Add:
Sliced chicken fillets and avocado
Leftover casserole of any kind
Heinz baked beans
Tomato (well drained)
Vegemite

Method of choice is a jaffle iron (trim the corners of the bread off once the iron has been clamped shut. It works brilliantly on a boat's gas cooktop:

Re: My favourite 'toastie' is......

Pizza toastie.

Salami.
Tomato
Cheese
Capsicum
Mushroom
A bit of oregano from the garden.

And it all tastes so much better in my 25 year old jaffle iron, given to me as a housewarming present all those years ago. There's enough embedded flavour in that thing to do two or three toasties with no filling at all.

Mind the first degree burns from the tomato, I believe more dangerous than baked beans in toasties, but that one might need careful testing to verify my claim.

Re: My favourite 'toastie' is......

Used to have one of these after a good visit to the pub - at that time a cheese onion and tomato was the weapon of choice - and beware the hot tomato!

I havent tried it yet, but a spam and tomato toastie could be a good way of using up those tins of spam!

Haha I'm still yet to meet anyone that calls them "Brevilles". Must be NSW thing.

Aside from that, ham and cheese, baked beans, or chicken, ham, cheese and mayo, scrambled egg with cheese and tomato sauce or anything with cheese!!!

Cheese, definitely. And they keep forever. We spent two weeks camping in Braemar and Aviemore living on nothing but the cheese toasties we'd made before the trip and a bag of lentils (tomato soup replacement).

Coops.
Must be because I live on the wrong side of the pond and speak a degenerate form of the language but I don't get this one. Has to be me since others apparently do.
