With some of the items like beef and milk being so basic commodities and normally not carrying a lot of taxes like fuel, I'm surprised to find some of the price differences being given.

Just how does SE Asia grow beef cheaper than somewhere else? I would think for the most part any food difference for commodity foods is actually due to fuel costs in general.

One thing that no one has mentioned is that in most of SE Asia one cannot find normal cuts of meats. Throughout Malaysia we found cuts of beef sold as 'beef block' or 'beef knuckle' or beef mince. Those were the ONLY cuts of beef sold. What we wouldn't have given for butchers who knew how to butcher.

Like most people (I would assume), we eat a lot of chicken instead of beef.

We have found the pork to be the best when it comes to meats in Thailand and have had no problem getting cuts we are use to. Both Big C and Makro stores have meat counter and butchers that will cut it anyway you like. And we much prefer the bacon from Thailand to any we find here in the Virginia grocery stores. The beef is another story. They just don't have a lot of it and the quality is poor so we just avoid it and stick with the pork, chicken or fish.

On the farm I grew up on we raised cattle and grew crops.

Great thread. I am also in the camp that would like to see chicken prices added as beef is not a universal staple. Also I like seeing local + some standard currency. Rates of exchange do not always follow local food prices and it if one is fixed income on usd pension for example, the roe could have a huge impact.

Although with the date stamp one can always find the roe at that time.

Oh, it is also a bit obvious that no seafood is listed. Understand that seafood varies tremendously but I don't know anyone who doesn't use "stir frying" shrimp when they can get them. Or maybe a 1 kilo red snapper or equivalent local fish.

Lol points taken on board .. i can see this as being a 12 point, CF generated, 4 seasonal thread and i think that would be a great idea, i would like to see more from Caribbean/Sth America/ Mexico but maybe their having too much fun!!

For a decent steak (from a Cow!) in Thailand really need to stick to the Westerner focussed stores and restaurants - and they are priced accordingly as it's not a local staple food.

But sometimes a steak that hangs off each side of a plate is needed ......they seemed to import a lot of Australian beef, or at least what was claimed to be...........but tasted good though .

It's not the cost of 7 items it is how you live that makes living in an area good or bad. If you only use 10 gal of fuel a month what is the $1.00 difference going to do. If you catch fish and don't buy the expensive steaks? And if you know that items in the Bahamas are 50% more then why do you not buy tooth paste where it is on sale? That would be like buying "organic", nitrogen fertilized engineered/hybrid vegetables vs cow dung engineered/hybrid vegetables. They have all been genetically altered! Same with our chicken and cows. Do you really think apples look that good naturally? Oh snap thread drift.... never mind

Ha ha yer lol, it seems the disease is more naturally caused, i laughed when there were reports fishermen were getting sick handling them.!!!!
We never got sick catching fish at Luggage point on the Brisbane River. Luggage point was the sewage outlet there were more franga's floating by than jelly fish in those days.
Greenpeace probably shoulda blamed nuclear subs for the fish blight......... Cheers

the thought that any fish I catch may need to be strayed down with bleach before handling, well just kind of ruins it for me
