We're in Krabi, Thailand and its about the same for us. Have to say we don't eat many potatoes and the minced beef is not worth buying. Stick with the chicken, pork or of course fish. Our main staples are rice and lots of fresh fruits and vegetables. It's a very healthy and cheap diet.

+1.

IMO do need a single currency for ease of comparison (and my take is that this thread more about the comparison between places and not so much about the actual cost of living in each) - and US Dollar as good as any (especially given the CF Membership being heavily skewed to the US).........easy enough for us non dollar folks to convert, at least roughly.

FWIW, how about distilling the info into a spreadsheet as at year end (IMO no problem in still collecting info in January)....and maybe with the Big Mac and / or Beer indices etc as comparitives?.......and possibly repeating the excercise every year? (and swapping the Mince for a chicken ).

I'm sorry but I seriously question the accuracy of the currency conversion to arrive at some of these numbers:

We were in Thailand one year ago and saw no food prices anywhere near like this. Really? 15 cents for 2.2 pounds of minced beef? Not in any of the stores we shopped at. Nor were potatoes anywhere one-quarter that cheap. Nor was the milk. The price quoted for eggs seems about right. BTW, we also did land travel throughout Thailand and shopped in more than just tourists ports. Never saw prices as inexpensive as quoted by Moufflon.

Depends where you go. I have been there 8 times and where I go the prices are like that. If you hang in BKK, Phucket, Chaing Mai or other places invaded by pale face, you can expect to pay pale face prices!...

Spuds might be a good indicator.... or are they a yam in Thailand?

Might not have been beef mince Same way as steak on a menu in France ain't come from a cow ....and not many horses in Thailand .

FWIW dairy products not a staple the same way as in the West - apparently mayonaise in a cheese sandwhich is gross! .........and IME pricing can vary enourmously - including sometimes (increasingly often?) the double pricing (one for locals, one for foreigners - if they can get away with it). Dirt cheap would be eating local style (foods / recipes) using local products.

Where is gasoline at 2.50/liter? Posted rates right now in Alberta is 96.5/liter. You must be at a very remote location.

4 litres Gas + 4 litres Diesel =

8 liters x $1.28= $10.24

Marine Diesel is higher here. So just a rough estimate.

Those are Vancouver prices. You would not believe what you pay in the small community on the North Coast I live in.

Happy New year and good luck with the Math :-)

I counted about 47 TRY (24.5 USD) on Turkish mainland.

But that assumes veggies bought at a market, UHT milk, and one secret with buying minced meat: you select a cut you like (for the estimate I assumed an inexpensive cut), then give it to the meat department or the butcher to mince. This way you know that it's fresh and it's much less expensive than already minced meat. And you can also combine beef and lamb for some tasty meatballs or burgers.
