dont want to labour a point or cast nosturtiums, but cast iron anything unless well painted and attached to the engine, is a study in rust on a boat - but its a good filter to see whos actually spending a bit of time aboard and whos watching from the lazyboy

We recently added green ceramic fry pan and am very happy so far.
The cast iron hasn't rusted in years on the boat.. but I do oil it regularly.

Re: Boaties Fry Pan

I have one of those Orgreenic pans from Walmart. I cant get anything to stick to it. I even burned cheese in it and it just slides out. The stainless steel rivets that hold the handle on is not no stick thou.
FYI if you have pet birds on board Teflon is a big no no.

Re: Boaties Fry Pan

There is occasionally a small square frypan with teflon non-stick for sale here in Oz supermarkets that also has raised 'griddle' bumps lengthwise across it, so it's good for 'grilling' steaks or dry roasting as the oil and juices drain away somewhat, which they don't in a flat-floored frypan of any stripe.
A few guys I know have the square pan because it fits better on a smaller stove, especially those with fiddles around them, so you can use the other burner(s) at the same time (without having to remove the fiddles first).

The flat-floored square pan is good for egg and bacon brekkies.....

Re: Boaties Fry Pan

We love our square electric fry pan.
- Heats up quickly, so it doesn't heat the cabin up as much (or we often cook on the back deck when really hot).
- No moisture in the cabin from burnt propane.
- It's amazing what you can cook in it. We even do some baking.

Love the cast iron but it's a hassle to deal with on the boat.

I've hated every stainless pan I've ever come across. It's like extra stick unless you have an inch of oil on the bottom.

Re: Boaties Fry Pan

I'm looking for cooking pots & pans that have removable handles and nest for efficient storage.

Ideally cast iron, but long as a heavy base, open to other styles.

I saw a Japanese style I liked but crazy expensive.

We are on our fourth year of using Magma and we are happy with these even though we are cast iron fans.

No teflon for me. Don't need no square pans, either. And those cost too much for what they are.

Re: Boaties Fry Pan

Have had a set of nesting Magma pots/pans for going on two decades now. I think I bought my set early after they were offered. My set includes four nesting pots, one pan which doubles as a cover for the big pot, and one general cover. Two detachable handles.

I have the teflon version. The pots are good quality, with heavy base. The teflon has scraped off in a few areas, especially on the most-used pots, but even this is holding up well.

We have some of these le creuset copies from Aldi
Had 5 years on land and now have two on the boat and get used daily.

They don't nest but they do work and the price is right.

Re: Boaties Fry Pan

Are there nesting like Magma but (even) better quality?

Prefer hefty bottoms, maybe steel covered copper, like large sizes, and avoid any coatings like the plague.

Baloney ! My two properly seasoned cast iron pans have about 22,000 cruising hours on them .... no rust.

Agreed. Cast iron pots and pans get rust from improper cleaning and/or lack of use. Ours have no rust except under one handle but hardly noticeable.

There are nesting pots with ceramic coating. But really the only pans we need with nonstick are a skillet and griddle. If you get a non-stick pan consider one that is compatible with an induction cook top. They are really handy and cook much faster than on a gas or regular electric stove. If you don’t have an induction hob you will want one one day. They are very inexpensive.
