Home made? Prefer moose, although it has to be done properly. Nothing better though on a cold day.
That made me laugh

Re: Best Canned Meat?

If you have even remotely half decent refrigeration there is no reason you can't eat 'fresh' meat for 6 or 7 weeks.
Just get a butcher who knows what he is doing to vacuum pack it and freeze it down to somewhere near 0*K then block stow it in your fridge.

Unzud is the canned meat capital of the world... its a favourite amongst the islanders... which is one reason they have so much diabetes, hypertension and obesity...... just saying.

Canned Platypus? Is that legal?

Canned Armadillo? Is that edible?

Canned Seal? That jaw with teeth…would put me off.

Re: Best Canned Meat?

While not technically "canned" precooked bacon available in pouches in the grocery store is a great source of tasty meat that doesn't require refrigeration.

I had some of the Lobster Paté last year. Good stuff. But, I also like Whitefish Salad and other fishy things like that.

Lobster paté?

Do you guys have any idea how hard it is to find a paté funnel that fits lobsters? And then how hard it is to hold the bugs still while you're cramming them full of rich food?

And then of course, when PETA finds out about this...

Best Canned Meat?

CRIPES!

Okay I did not mention I was looking in the "reasonable price range".

You guys look at the prices on some of these meats? Adding 200 watts of solar would be cheaper.

But this has been educational. Costco is now a possible chicken and salmon purveyor.

Keep the ideas coming.

Best Canned Meat?

Do to my fiancé having to work to support me we've been restricted to two or three week trips.

We fill the tiny freezer compartment with frozen meat and leave the ice cube trays out.

In the cockpit we put a 48 qt Igloo cooler with the attached cushion. Next a plastic tray to hold everything out of ice melt and about 10 lb of dry ice. More frozen meat and about 20 lb of ice. Cold drinks are stored in the ice and the ice is used in cocktails.

As the supply of meats are used we will put one or two ice cube trays in. All in all a comfy two week trip to Key West and then the Dry Tortugas. If the urge hits we might buy some fresh veggies in Key West and top off on fuel and water. Of course block ice lasts a durn sight longer than cubed but not always easy to find. Just chip off what you need for a cocktail or iced tea. Even though I have refrigeration, couple of 20 lb blocks in the bottom reduces my power draw. Better yet, we will save extra 1 gal milk jugs, freeze them at home and put them in the bottom of the fridge. As they melt one has a source of ice water.

Rich

Edit: sorry a bit of thread drift there. The point was there are ways of saving fresh provisions that don't require extensive processing.

Yes, that's what the Newfies call it. The first time I heard that I had no idea what they're talking about, cuz out west here we would have called it canned moose.
