Re: Best Canned Meat?
There are a ton of companies providing canned meats. When we were kids, camping , we were partial to DAK canned hams and their canned bacon. Now just dos web search on canned meats. One that didn't look to bad is Internet-grocery dot net. There are others as well.
For bad weather, we keep a small supply of military MRES ( meals ready to eat). Just pour some hot water into the pouch, squish around to mix , Bon appetit.
Good luck,
Rich.
Ps if possible try to get a couple of small variety orders to test.

Re: Best Canned Meat?
We used Brinkman Farms canned meats. Very high quality in every regard. They make several different canned meat products. I can highly recommend them.
If you carry some onions, canned vegetables and spices, you can make some very tasty stews and spaghetti sauces.

Re: Best Canned Meat?
corned beef for hash, very hearty always a hit with my overworked crew,
canned crabmeat for a curry.
canned clams over linguine.
I go to ethnic stores and try any thing that seems interesting, but don't stop there, try 3rd world markets and inner city markets in the 1st world, products there that you will not find elsewhere in middle class neighborhoods.
Ground beef in a can (or can your own) goes with so many innovative dishes.
Even if you have refrigeration (I don't) there will come a time when it will let you down , so don't forget the can opener.

Re: Best Canned Meat?
I use Costco canned chicken, Hormel's Black Label canned ham (try not to puncture the thin can when storing) and the soft-packaged Chata Chilorio found in Mexico. The C.C. types I like are pavo (turkey), pibil(no translation, it is a spice) and the original pork flavor, in that order.
I may try Brinkman's canned beef because I have a hard time finding beef, especially without gravy.
I should say that while I prefer products with a small amount of salt, I don't consider salt very much when I buy these products.

Space is limited and with only 150 watts of solar cooling is also limited to essential items that will not spoil if they get warm (i.e. beer).
Any insights will be appreciated.

Download for free the guides from National Center for Home Food Preservation | USDA Publications, buy a good quality pressure cooker and can your own foods, including meat.
Make sure where you are going will not have a problem bringing in canned food/meat.
Later,
Dan

Re: Best Canned Meat?
Tinned meat can make TVP seem like a reasonable concept.(G)
Costco's products are pretty good, particularly if you are using the beef or chicken as a "chili extender" or such. I've tried a couple of brands of tinned chicken and can't say that any one of the major brands has been distinctive, for better or worse. And if you try to make a chicken salad out of it, you can pass it off as a tuna salad that doesn't have a fishy taste. It's really that bland, no matter what you do with it.
But since you're going to be living with it, I'd suggest going to the supermarket, buying a can each of the four major brand names you can recognize, and trying them.
Just ignore the Underwood tinned meats...like Spam Pizza, they're an acquired taste.

Hormel's 'Picnic Ham' may be just the thing for you.... it contains 'mechanicaly separated chicken'
I passed on it having read the label.... once however I did buy a dozen tins of Spam.... I kid you not... it took 12 years before they were all eaten.
I'd go vegan before I would eat tinned meat.
