That keel situation could be a real problem. There is probably a lot of damage to the laminate if it shifted enough to cause the fuel tank to leak. Also with the pounding it took there will be micro damage to the laminates and the whole hull actually may be somewhat damaged. It will be interesting to see the results. I bet the insurance company writes it off and sells it for salvage. Someone will patch it up and put it up for sale.

Ooof! This story just gets better and better. Charges were dropped against two of the three because, apparently, they didn't know the boat was stolen.

I'm trying to envision this. Some scuzzy guy who cuts his own hair and claims to own an Oyster 82 AND is loaded with pizza and beer, invites two strangers to come party on his $3,000,000 yacht. It never occurs to them that wealthy yachtsmen tend not to have to solicit potential guests in the parking lot. If they have any initial suspicions, they get over them because the owner has a pegleg and can talk like a pirate, and besides he's serving high-end beer, so let's get drunk.

Once everybody is drunk, someone finds the boat key and they decide to go out for a joyride at 0100h because, hey, everybody knows that boating is better when drunk. And after they end up on the beach in Pacifica rather than in their original destination, Hawaii, charges are dropped because there is no law against being stupid, not even if you're drunk and stupid at the same time.

Is it possible I've got this right?

Re marina gates:

In my experience, the vast majority of theft from boats in marinas comes from two sources, neither of which are deterred by gates... folks who arrive by dinghy in the night and, sadly,other marina residents. The incidence of theft of whole boats from marinas is extremely low.

I think that the gates only provide a nuisance to legitimate folks, although they reduce casual onlookers and tourists.

Bash you live in Sausilito. How many times have you seen a derelict looking guy jump into a BMW or Porsche? It is one place you really can't tell a book by it cover.

Just wondering out loud here -- How long would it take before you noticed that your boat was stolen. I suppose it would depend on the season. In the summer I am gone for three months so if someone stole it at that time it could be more then three months if the timing was right.

If it happened in the winter I am away from my boat for two weeks at a time.

Someone could take my boat and put a good amount of distance on the boat prior to me finding out it was gone. I have friends on the dock but I have only been there a few months so don't have phone numbers etc.

Hah, hah. The SFYC is located at Belvedere Cove, north across the bay from San Francisco, on the Marin Peninsula. Richardson Bay separates Belvedere Cove and Sausalito.
