re: Cruise Ship Costa Concordia - MERGED THREADS

Schettino comes repeatedly with different explanations and I think that he lost all credibility regarding his capacity as a captain and the proper statements of what happened.

How can Costa Crucales employ such a clown. They must be complete out of their proper mind.

I wonder if there is a suicide watch on the captain?

He is only suicidal when it comes to other peoples boats and lives. When it his own he heads for the life boat

I dont think this is fair criticism of the captain. We will see what transpires, how much knowledge or pressure the Company put him under, whether this was standard practice doing such close flybys,

As to his abandoning ship, there are several conflicting stories as to when he left. Its not looking good for him, but I dont think we such degenerate in mud slinging.

MTS "Oceanos" was a French-built and Greek-owned cruise ship that sank off South Africa's eastern coast on 4 August 1991. Captain Yiannis Avranas was accused of leaving hundreds behind ,with no one other than the ship's onboard entertainers to help them evacuate. Avranas claimed that he left the ship first in order to arrange for a rescue effort.

Evidently, Capt. Avranas is working as the captain of a Greek ferry, and was never fined nor punished for his behaviour.

Concordia was drifting toward the shore, starboard to the beach, when the keel contacted the bottom a list to starboard developed.

Here is a list of data that the Voyage Data Recorder should provide:

(Source: Wikipedia article on Voyage Data Recorders)
Speed log – Speed through water or speed over ground.
Gyro compass – Heading.
Radar – As displayed or AIS data if no off-the-shelf converter available for the Radar video.
Audio from the bridge, including bridge wings.
VHF radio communications.
Echo sounderDepth under keel.
Main alarms – All IMO mandatory alarms.
Hull openings – Status of hull doors as indicated on the bridge.
Watertight & fire doors status as indicated on the bridge.
Hull stress – Accelerations and hull stresses. <li style="font-weight: normal; margin-bottom: 0.1em; padding-left: 30px;">
Rudder – Order and feedback response.
Engine/Propeller – Order and feedback response.
Thrusters* – Status, direction, amount of thrust % or RPM.
Anemometer and weather vaneWind speed and direction

There is a report that the VDR "broken" for several weeks, found here: http://www.tobetravelagent.com/costa...ut-its-broken/

In addition, a video recorder hard drive has been recovered recently which will show activity on the bridge.

Two more bodies have been recovered. The total is now 15 dead, and 17 missing.

If the list to starboard was the result of contacting the bottom then the prior list to port must not have been very severe when she made contact with the bottom.

Exactly. It's got everything to do with physiology and little to do with assumptions about Protestantism or Englishness. While I could very likely (based on prior experience) operate a boat while on the outside of two glasses of wine, I choose not to, and given the inertia of most keel boats, I would prefer if others did as well.

That aside, I wonder if it customary in such cases to give the captain and/or other bridge crew tests for drugs and alcohol at the earliest shoreside opportunity? It would be fairly automatic in the case of a car or truck accident.

Given that the hull is laying just about on its side on a rock slope, putting cables under will be difficult. Normally cables are put under using water jets to tunnel through mud or sand, but this is rock. And getting airbags under her is going to be a real pain, again because shes almost flat on the slope. Pulling on the off side will also tend to help her slip. Consider also the aerial view of the ship and shore. In order to parbuckle they will need to build a solid base for the winches to sit on which means a fairly large engineering job in itself.

One more thing to consider is the light weight construction of the ship. Someone mentioned WWII Pearl Harbor salvage in an earlier post. Consider that they were salvaging warships with heavy plate and armor. Tying in the lift points to the structure won't be easy because of its light construction. You can see how badly the port side is crushing just from the weight of the ship. And as I mentioned earlier, closing off all those monster windows and balcony doors is going to be even more fun. There is no room to work outside the ship, so putting patches on from outside is out for a goodly amount of side. They may try to pour concrete into the cabins, but that will add weight in the worst possible place.

I am looking forward to seeing how this job gets done. I would not be surprised if she is carted off in chunks on site. Giglio will make a fortune housing and entertaining the crews used to chop her to pieces. Sometimes they just can't be refloated.

I find your speculation quite plausible. This is otherwise going to be like salvaging a pinata after the first splits have appeared. Whoever runs the hotel in Giglio should add a wing...business is about to pick up.
