Re: A List of Unsuccessful Bluewater Passages

Having looked through the list, most of which are abandonment, I dont think my experience belongs on the list, but the only delivery that I didnt complete was a Baba 40 from Hawaii to California. It was one of the best maintained boats I had ever been on. The owner kept it perfect. I thought it was going to be a sweet delivery. Third night out it kicked up a bit, but nothing unusual for close hauled against the trades. In the morning I did my normal visual check of everything and almost #%&^. The roller furler upper swivel had broken, and the halyard was holding the sail and mast up. It was an odd furler that incorporated the head stay. I turned down wind and was able to roll up the jib, and put the spinny halyard to the stem head. With almost 2000 miles to go and an unrepairable rig I went back to Hawaii. It was an odd brand furler and there were no parts available, so I flew home. The owner decided to keep the boat in Hawaii. No rescue, no abandonment no injuries, but an unsuccessful blue water passage. Even nearly perfect boats can have things go wrong._______Grant.

Yes, you are absolutely right. I am missing a lot of missing/lost boats.

For example, I have not put the recent mis-adventure of the Christians to Kiribati on the list because I do not know enough. For example, it would be nice to know what type of boat they were on, and why they abandoned their boat (was it really because they were just lost????).

I heard of another wooden boat missing the the Pacific this year, a young couple on tight budget on a leaky boat who left from Hawai to the PNW, but I do not have enough information about them.

Can anyone help fill in the gaps?

Thanks Grant. You got the boat to a safe harbor. Damn fine job at that. The list is for boats that did not make it back to a port.

What about the solo Colombian who abandoned his boat in the Pacific a few months ago after autopilot failure and a month of hand steering? There is a thread here somewhere and noonsite has details.

What about Lady Domina?

Also, did not know anything about Queenqueg II have the first book about the circumnav on a Piver Lodesar. Any idea the design?

Also, a FP 43 or 42 capsized/ flipped in the med last year. Don't think anyone died. Interesting how the mags are too busy writing glossy articles about multihulls to cover the recent capsizes.

Richard Wood abandoned his Eclipse cat off Central America in the Pacific several years ago. Boat was found afloat and sitting on her lines a few months later near the Galapagos.

The catamaran capsize in the med is on the list. The boat was called "LoveLove". A real tragedy - five were lost.

There is also a similar sized catamaran "Queewueg II" which capsized off the coast of South Africa. Two of the three crew members were lost.

Anyone got a good link to the boat info for the Lady Domina or Richard Wood's boat?
