Hi Everyone - From Oz

G'day everyone

I've been lurking here for a while now. I'm finally going to be getting my first decent cruising boat (Rogers Contessa 26). She's a bit of a basket case, but the price is too good to resist and I reckon she's going to scrub up real nice.

Still doing the final logistics thing (got to be pulled out in Sydney Harbour, then trucked up here, craned off into my front yard & set up with Brownell boat stands. Then I can slowly strip her and make her feel good again (no, not like that!).

Got a lot to do before she feels the tickle of water again (couple of long running projects to complete first - one being to finish off a Hawaiian outrigger canoe build that's about half way through ).

Anyway, you'll probably want to ignore many of my posts. I'll likely just be probing with loads of idiotic questions that newbies always seem to pester people with. Bye for now.

Good little sea boat the Contessa 26, we are just a bit north of you near the border. Welcome to this place.

Re: Hi Everyone - From Oz

Cheers Coops. Sounds like a good destination to make for once she's up & running again (if we're both still on the planet that is). My folks live on the water at Port MacQuarie, so its just a hop skip & jump from there to the border (isn't it?).

Anyway, thanks for the welcome mate.

Re: Hi Everyone - From Oz

Just one question, are you sure that it is a Contessa 26? I have never seen one over here but there are quite a few Contessa 25's which are a Peter Cole design from memory and still a damn good little sea boat. Just asking out of interest, plus, do not want to see you get specifications etc of the wrong boat.

G'Day Scotty, and welcome to CF. We'll be waiting for your idiotic questions so that we can pontificate, obfuscate and confuse with our idiotic answers!

Get cracking on the restoration and we'll be looking for you along the coast somewhere.

Cheers,

Jim

Cheers Scotty and welcome!

Please start out your first idiotic questions with one about which is the best anchors, then work your way up from there. It always seems to get the blood circulating (and letting) going.

Hey Coops

Yes mate, don't worry. She's definitely the real deal. I've seen the Cole designs, and my nose starts wrinkling at the audacity of daring to name such an inferior craft after a little thoroughbred like the Rogers/Taylors Contessa! (Apologies Mr Cole, if you're reading this. I'm just the messenger. But really, don't use the name......)

Thanks for the thought Coops.

Re: Hi Everyone - From Oz

Ultimate congratulations then SD. Got yourself a classic. Had no intention of raining on your parade good sir, have seen a lot of folks duped by descriptions before now. Glad you are not one of them.

Re: Hi Everyone - From Oz

A Contessa 26 - a very seaworthy boat with a performance pedigree. Very good to windward, but wet!

Most have been raced at some stage in their lives. You want to watch for mast compression damage. Some have additional bracing inside, wich restricts an already tight space.

A good small ocean passage boat.

Welcome aboard Scotty. You've got yourself a great classic by the sound of it and well worth the effort. Remember, there's no such thing as stupid questions, only stupid mistakes.

Cheers

Re: Hi Everyone - From Oz

Aloha and welcome aboard!
Good to have you here. Our sailing club has two International Folkboats which are very similar to your Contessa. Really a fine sailing boat and very capable.
kind regards,
