San Francisco Bay is one of the primo spots on the planet for sailing, so I have no doubt you will find any kind of challenge or fun you seek there. I sailed there for years and enjoyed it very much. Have fun!

Since you are new to sailing and SF, and I assume you would like to learn good places to sail, I will give you a link to a guide that is concise but helpful. It shows and tells with some good insights. It even has an itinerary for a day sail around the bay with tips on direction to go and places to see and things to do. I hope it gives you a good start. It was published by "Latitude 38" the local sailing rag (magazine) that has long been a source for good stuff related to sailing in the SF Bay.

I have a boat in a marina in Alameda, but I'm also quite interested in sailing the South Bay. I've sailed from Alviso and Redwood City.

Most books about sailing the bay devote about a paragraph to everything south of the San Mateo bridge!

Would be interested to hear about your experiences sailing the South Bay.

./..Humm.. I went to alviso a couple time and redwood city (bair island).. but it's too boring... I keep myself around berkeley, sausalito, angel island and sf... I going south very rarely...

Have you ever gone out what I call the "Back Door?" Through San Leandro Bay? We do it often. Same time from Grand Marina out the estuary as it is going under the four bridges to the south bay. There's tons of great sailing in over 20 feet of water west of the Oakland Airport, and it's almost always completely empty, like sailing on the ocean. We draw 6 feet and as long as the water is 4.1 feet or higher, no problem getting out. I often circumnavigate Alameda for a nice day's outing.

I've kayaked San Leandro Bay, and motored the RIB down there from the slip a few times, but never actually sailed around Alameda. Did you have any trouble getting bridges to open?

I'm to new to go to sf.. I'm just happy in the south bay for now.. mornings to boot..

..not at all.. just call on ch. 9 or use your horn.. they cannot open between rush hours unless it's an emergency... but after high street it's little bit shallow until you find aeolian yacht club... then the channel become very shallow and narrow.. keep on your left!!
