HALLBERG BABY GETS DAD!

THANK YOU EVERYONE! THE DAD HAS BEEN FOUND!

He did not go to the Panama Canal. He did not even make it close to the Panama Canal from what I understand. I didn't get to talk to him long, for some reason he called me from North Florida, which makes no sense as to why I couldn't get him on his cell phone. I also didn't get a chance to ask him where the heck he'd been for 2 weeks. But, I suspect, sailing along wherever he wanted to go.

But, he's getting rained on.

My question is if anyone has any books or websites or classes they could recommend for me. I obviously have learned I know nothing about boats, and all I did as a kid was what my father told me. I paid attention to his directions, but I never followed the technical parts, and only followed his orders. I rarely asked why, because I felt safe that he did know what he was doing. Now, I realize if I knew more, I'd feel safer. I also am buying him a phone as soon as he gets back.

I can go aboard with him and have him show me everything, but is there an overall course that I could take to be better prepared?

I'm serious about this, and I want to learn.

BEST TO ALL OF YOU!
KATE

I am afraid that does not work that way here.

There are several good sailing schools out there and one is specific to teaching women. Do a Google search and you will find some near a place that will work for you. Also both the Coast Guard Auxiliary and the Power Squadron teach basic boating and navigation courses for a nominal fee. A good starting place.

I'm glad things worked out, Kate. And good for you in wanting to learn! I've found that sailing is one of those things that you can get the basics (at least enough to make the boat go somewhat in the direction you want) in 2 hours, yet still be learning after 20 years. Helps to keep the body fit and the mind sharp. Plus, there are few things in this world that can beat a nice beam reach in calm seas on a nice day. (Just wish there were more of them.)

However, now that you've gotten your immediate goal, don't just disappear. This is a really good group of folks. I've learned a lot from them.

Aloha Kate,
Welcome aboard! You are getting lots of support and will only add that there are lots of opportunities to learn through many arenas. Florida is a good place to learn and the phone book should have some sailing schools. ASA and US Sailing are two good organizations that have websites and you can find who teaches their courses in your area.
Kind regards,
JohnL

Learn to Sail

Kate,

Try www.sarasotasailingsquad.com they are located just south of Longboat in Ken Thompson park (Just over the New Pass draw bridge heading to St. Armand).

1717 Ken Thompson Pkwy
Sarasota, FL 34236
(941) 388-2355

They do a lot of sailing on the bay and would think they could help you.

If I need crew help on my boat at Longboat Key Moorings (by Publix) when I am there with my wife and kids sailing the bay or close gulf I will send you a PM to see if you are interested.

Good Luck,

Shawn
