Advice, Please, About the Island Trader 46

A sailboat with out it's mast will probably roll less (angle wise) as the total righting moment is increased BUT the motion will be a lot quicker (moment of inertia a lot smaller) which make it harder to keep your balance.

The key is to have the sails up....

Ballast. Please check to see that your ballast is in place. If you add rigging without proper ballast you'll flip the boat. I think something has been removed if you are riding really high in the water and she rolls excessively.

Hi,
I sold my 40 Island Trader to some guys who sailed it to Denmark. I am now looking for a 46.
The rolling problem can be thought of as a see saw, without the small weight on a long arm the other side of will react quite briskly.

If lencol is the person we think you are, we bought your old Island Trader 46. The Coup D' Amour. We love her and actually have her new masts to go up very soon. We love her and we are fixing her up.

I owned one. Chartered it in the virgins for six years. Ketch rigged, meant to be used with sails even though its advertised as a trawler sailboat. The freeboard is higher than most but full tanks, generator and engine below the water line, plus the balast should be enough. I would check to see if the keel has been shaved. I'm with Zee on this one. I loved it. One of the best boats I've ever owned. It was ideal for honeymoon couples charter work. My only regret was growing too old to keep up with the maintenance.

Cliff- thanks so much. Yeah honeymoon charters are the way we are thinking. Especially since her name is, Coup D' Amour (a take over of love or a shot of love). We love her and have been enjoying getting her back in shape. We would love to hear more about the one you owned. Ours was the last one made. The previous one Madagascar Jack sadly ran aground. The pictures are horrible to see. Keep in touch. We should be heading towards Puerto Rico once her masts are up.

That hull design has almost nothing in common with a Cape or an Alberg. It may have sails but looks to be much more a motorboat. Its way top-heavy.

I was amazed when I spoke with Don Miller, the builder, the other day. He said she was built an designed to be at full sail in Force 8 winds. Sounds crazy to me but..... That's what he said.
They do have 8500#s of lead and Peter had his going 8 knots in 20 knots of wind a few weeks back. We love ours!!!!!!!!!
