Segway Scooters on a Boat

Hi

Does anyone own a Segway? They are the electric scooters with two wheels side by side, a gyro keeps it balanced.

I was looking into buying a used one with side bags and was curious if any others have one or have looked into getting one for their boat to use when island hopping.

Never heard of it. My side decks aren't big enough to scoot around on. : ) I've opted for folding bikes. In addition to not taking much room they don't cost anything to operate and are easily repairable/replaceable.

Sounds cool, but I would think about how to store it, recharge it, as it may drain your batteries quick, and getting it on and off the boat. If you have to get it off the boat via the dinghy, I think that would get old real quick.

I know of a guy that has a pair of them.......It is an ego thing.......nothing more nothing less.

When I have been out for days and come to shore....the first thing I want to do is walk around.

They make big knobby tires for the beach, I see them all the time out in California on the beach in the same salt enviroment.

With the extented battery they have a 24 mile range. That's a lot of walking

I've spent a lot of hours on them and it seems they would be a bit awkward to get on/off a boat unless it had a large enough gangway. They do hold up in the rain but I don't know about the salt environment.

I just carry a cheap battery operated folding two wheeled scooter. It does 15 MPH on the flat. Good for running around small towns and marinas.

The beach police use them here in Atlantic Beach during the summer. I think it seriously detracts from the little respect a cop would normally get when he is riding around town with a helmet on and accompanied by the whirring of his motors.

Segways are nice but I have one of these

and at ~ 1,000 USD they are much cheaper, and it is much more convenient on many levels (easy to fix by yourself, charges quickly, doesn’t take a nuclear power plant to charge, folds for quick storage, carries 2 people [if less than 400Lbs], less attention by ‘spectators and the law’ ).

You can also spen > 3,000 for Li-ion's that do go a lot further but 10 miles on one of these is enough.

Looks great. Less technology, but that's probably a good thing, and its a lot less to loose when dropped into the drink.

How far does it go on a charge?

The Go-Ped site said about 8 miles per charge. That's respectable for $1k, (I think )
