Well, consider this. I changed the name of my boat last year and botched the ceremony -- confused the compass directions. Then set off for Poole. Near in the entrance to Needles Channel, a treacherous piece of water with four-knot cross currents, the grave of many ships, and in a gale to boot, I went to start up the engine and take down the sails to motor through. The engine wouldn't start. I somehow managed to sail through the northern channel into Christchurch Bay, hove to, and tried and tried for hours to find the problem and get the engine to start, going through all the wiring etc., while the storm raged around us. I finally called for a tow -- the only time I've ever done it on this boat. Got towed into Poole Harbor, tied up to the fuel barge there, and the Seastart guy came on board, turned the key -- and it started right up (I had been turning the key all day long).

The next day replaced all the connectors between the wiring harness and engine.

Bad luck? Hmmm.

Folklore clearly has it that changing the name of a boat is bad luck. Since my luck with boats doesn't have that great of a track record, never been able personally to tell a difference. Had a new boat, didn't change the name, had problems. Bought a used boat, changed the name, had problems. There are so many other things you can do on a boat to cause bad luck, it's hard to say, even if you change the name, that the name change caused the bad luck. For instance:

Its bad luck to start a sail on Friday;

Its bad luck to start a sail on some days of religious significance;

Its bad luck to have a woman on board;

Its bad luck to have bananas on board;

Its bad luck to have somebody die on board;

Sharks are bad luck;

Whistling on board will raise a gale; and

Sighting an AK or RPG portends some really bad luck.

This is clearly an extreme case. As a courtesy, I consulted with Neptune himself who offered two solutions: immediate destruction of the vessel named Purple Turd, or a distant second option of adding an "le", making the name Purple Turdle. Better to be thought spelling-challenged than outrageously lubberly.

im looking at a boat and want to change the name,
so ive decided to be totaly practical and sientific, haul it out, stick on the new name, pour a bottle over the bow and live happily ever after "maybe"

OK, but lift the mast to inspect it anyway - that's only sensible; and before you put it back in, toss a penny under the base. That should do it.

Nah, no problems with changing the name of a boat. All you have to do is take the old lettering off, sink the boat, re-float it and put the new lettering on. Simple!
