My first boat was "The Mother Ship" , my current boat is "Another Mother Ship"

Last weekend I saw one I liked, "St. Somewhere"

I have also seen "chillin the most" which I would assume came from the KidRock song Cowboy

I once chartered a cat in the BVI named "Sognare" but we just called it soggy nuts

We have recently bought a yacht called "By Order Of The Secretary". Its unofficial name is BOOTS.
Various reasons have been given for the name including the owners wife also being his secretary and telling him to get a better boat or intending to win a yacht race in which the winners name was published followed by By Order of The Secretary.
We are in the process of changing the name to something much simpler and but less "witty".

I recently just got a 27 Hunter Cherubini the name is, "Meant to Be" I have been thinking about a new name but the way the boat came about I am hesitant to change it. I saw it on ebay during the July 4th weekend. It looked good and no one was really bidding on it. I drove down to MA and looked the boat over on the outside. It looked and felt solid. So, I put a bid in through Auction Sniper and decided in the last minutes to pull out of the auction. Surprise Auction Sniper was locked in and would allow me to cancel the bit. So. I won the boat for under $2000.00. The owner/broker called me minutes after the auction ended and wanted to know if I wanted to back out. I told him I would go back down and give the boat a look over one more time. After spending two and half hours looking for problems I came to the conclusion that other then minor repairs and cleaning the only thing I had to worry about was the diesel. The diesel turned by hand but the fuel had been in the tank for two years but with the almost new sails and cushions I figured that even if the diesel needs a rebuild that the price was well worth it. So, I guess "Meant to Be" is a good a name as any.
Ops, got to go New Room called we have Tornado Warnings up here.

Hi I'm new to the forum and sailing (but not boating). I just bought my very own sailboat an old 14' racing sloop! It has a name on it from the original owner "Shemac". I have no idea what that means maybe it has something to do with sailing or it's just some inside thing he made up. Either way I was thinking of naming it "Hang on Sloopy!" like the McCoys song.

My favorite was a former neighbor "No Tan Lines", owned by a stripper.

Boat names

I had a contest at the pub I work at to help determine a name for the boat. That was two years ago, I have narrowed it down but still have not decided. Here are some ones that I rejected:

The Virgin Ride
It's So Big!
The Slippery Deck
Sea Cup
The Insolent Mynx
The Soggy Beaver

I was on a dinghy a few months ago called Plan B.

Thought that was brilliant.

The one fundamental rule that needs to be considered when naming a boat is whether the name is simple enough for use over VHF to non-native english speakers. If it causes confusion or embarassment it should be avoided.

That could work; or, given your screen name, how about the old Rascals song "Groovin"?

Welcome aboard!

Not a bad idea... my screen name is from the fact that I have a 14-foot Rascal, I don't really remember a ton of little rascals shows, but I have seen quite a few. I was thinking "Hang on Sloopy" since it's a sloop, but maybe I could just call it "O-Tay!"

Not generally a fan of stupid names but there is a photo sequence i saw on the net of a 27ft cat pitchpoling taken from a boat in front, way cool, anyway the cats name was "Cat Sass".
Another i saw many moons ago was a boat that some guy had built from scrounged materials in Fiji or the Cook islands that he appropriatly named "Maid of Dunnage",this was in the 1970s and was sort of a poke at a bunch of well known British race boats with names like "Maid of Mallam" and "Maid of Endor" or something like that.
