Ready for Tropical Storm Lee

What else have I forgotten or overlooked?: Galley is well stocked. Water tanks are full. Holding tank is empty. Extra lines have been run to the pilings on both sides. The lines are tied on real high at the fixed pilings. Fenders are in place. The Honda generator is handy.


I know one thing I forgot. I went to the showers to take a hot shower. It was raining. I got soaked. I forgot a towel. Hard to dry off with wet clothes and high humidity!


Tropical storm Lee is forecast to drop 15 to 20 inches of rain. The expected storm surge here just off of Lake Pontchartrain is expected to be four and a half feet. It is up about two feet right now. The winds is not bad yet. The marina will turn off the electricity when it rises another foot or so. The city of Slidel, LA is well mobilized.

where are ye docked--if you are in bayou, anchor to land, one anchor --dig in good, and one from other end into the channel there.. if on an end tie situation, one anchor in the channel is good, like in eden isles and other bayou marinas with end ties.
dont forget to make some lines from bow to stern and from stern to bow--those are called spring lines. donot snug it to the dock-- will come over top of pilings and could get pierced. not a good thing for boats.
i weathered ida in eden isles, slidell--she was easy.... but you are this time on the wrong side of storm. be safe

I went down to Cocodrie about 30 miles south of Houma this morning to secure things at my fishing camp. Intermittent rain some heavy, with wind gusts about 15 maybe 20 mph. The water was up about 2'. but rising.
My trawler is in Houma on a dead end canal off the ICW, water there was about 18" above high tide at noon, light rain then but probably heavier now. That spot is well protected from all but north winds. Yesterday the predictions at landfall were for 20-30 mph winds today the prediction was raised to 50-60 mph, big difference!.

Best wishes to y'all over Louisiana way. The storm sped up overnight; it's ashore now in lower Louisiana (was previously not predicted to make landfall until late tonight/early tomorrow).

Here on Mobile Bay as of Sept 3 7:45am we've had intermittant rain for the past 24 hours, sometimes heavy, with more forecast through Monday with accumulations of up to 20". Winds are light now but forecast to build to 20-25 knts later today, upwards of 30 knts tonight and up to 40 knts Sunday/Monday. Tides are predicted up but I haven't yet been down to the boat this morning to see conditions; planning a visit in a bit. We took off all sails and canvas yesterday; already had doubled lines on from an earlier trip.

We're at a marina in Bayou Chico in Pensacola, FL. We took down the sun shade and bimini and tightened up the lines. We filled the water tanks just in case and have plenty of fuel on board for engines and generator, if needed.

Other than intermittant rain and some wind gusts, everything is fine so far.

Our marina has floating docks and is known as one of the safest in the area during a hurricane, so we're not too worried. We live aboard, so we can monitor any other problems that might come up.

The water is high enough that the marina has killed the electricity that runs in a metal conduit below the piers. It is strange to step waay down to the finger piers. Even the finger piers are above water for the moment. The wind has not been very strong. The rain has come in waves of strong downpours with dry periods in between. This has allowed the big pumps that were installed after hurricane Katrina to keep the flooding down inside the area protected by the levees.


So to recap: Six to ten inches in the first half of the storm. 35 mph winds, gusts to fifty.


I left the dodger and bimini up because the winds are not predicted to be very high but very large amounts of rain are expected. I did put on the mainsail cover and tightly furl the Genoa and wrap it with several turns of the sheets.


All is cool right now. I am turning off the computer to conserve batteries.
