you are very right, how much does it cost to go cruising they ask? As much as you have! plain and simple.

I am looking for people who will quote costs. We plan on not using marinas. One cost I have no idea of is maintenance costs. We intend of sailing around the word in a 54' ferro cement that is in excellent condition. I understand that costs vary for many reasons but I would do most of the work myself or trade work as I am a diesel mechanic and understand anything mechanical. Any input would be appreciated.

Car insurance, gas & maintenance, house upkeep, property taxes are replaced by boat insurance and diesel fuel and boat maintenance. Food and health along with many other living expenses remain the same. I think it will cost most people the same to be off cruising on the boat as it cost them to stay ashore. Obviously this is not the same for all. Some get by with less and some spend a huge amount.

I read the post, but I still suggest that the numbers don't transfer across the board. We are fultime liveaboard cruisers, however; we cruise slowly and seasonally from the Keys or Bahamas to Maine. I spend about $700/year for liability only insurance; about $4,000/year on maintenance, parts & upkeep; about $500/month on marinas, diesel and operation. I add much more/month with food, extended family support, health care, travel and other discretionary spending.
