Just bought my first and probably last boat. Seeing that I'm 71! A Bristol 30' I'm out of mind with joy!
I don't know what thread to put this on, but I have a lot of questions. I shall do a few at a time so as not to bore everyone.
I want to replace the ice box. I have never seen anyone try and put a full size frig and freezer in, but are there any really good combinations of freezer and frig for a sailboat to take the place of the box? Also an approx list of stores for 3 month cruise. I have no idea of staples and amount of drinking water needed for two people. I have to start to adapt to a new way of cooking and storing food.

You might want to look at 4 to 4.5 CF dorm fridge's. The ones with separate freezer and fridge. I've been using one for 7 years now both at dock ad at anchor via inverter. It of course needs to be bolted down for sailing, and latches installed on the door's.

In year two of my first ever sailboat I get your excitement. I was as excited two years ago and remain so now. But the intervening 24 months have held many lessons for this newbie. How much boating/sailing experience do you have? I ask because if I were new to sailing I am not sure refrigeration would be on the top of my to do list. Some time spent in getting a clear picture of the boat's conditions (there are always surprises) might make the project stage more enjoyable. Just sayin'...

engle makes a nice 12 volt drop in refrigerator that might work for your boat. the bristols always look nice especially on the inside. good luck.

The reason you don't see fridge freezers on sailboats much are twofold : the lack of room, and the strict power budget that cruising boats are on.

Perhaps you could tell us more about your cruising plans, and experience. There is a lot more to planning a 3 month voyage than food and water.

We bought our sailboat in June of this year, and it's funny because one of the first things on our replacement list was the ice box. Well, five monthes later, that has slipped WAY down on the list of things to do/change!

That being said, Dometic has some interesting options for refrigeration/freezing. A friend of ours (on a power boat) has a unit from them and he loves it.

about replacing the icebox: i don't know how much work it would be on your boat, but on ours the insulation was no good and couldn't be easily added, so i ripped the old setup out (and removing the entire galley to get to it) and rebuilt the box and installed a seafrost unit. very happy with the results, but the job took me more than 400 hrs of work (after that i probably just lost count), and if you convert that to 100/hr labor charges at your local LIS boatyard, it was probably the most expensive beer i had the other day.

so if i were to do it over again, i probably wouldn't. although i'm sure the pain will be forgotten, and i'll be happy to have done it. cost me a season of sailing though - couldnt' get out really with the stove and the sink and the rest scattered around the main salon.
