I recall being at a covered dish in Gerogetown and it was the typical happy time enjoyed by all.

Then this one couple showed up. I had not met them, but noticed that some people started to leave... even though there was plenty of food and evening left.

They chatted around, and I (thankfully) overheard something he said in passing before he got to me. He was trying to raise the question about what people did for a living...

... he was some kind of insurance / investment guy trying to develop contacts.... it was like someone dropped a rotting corpse on the beach.

Multi-level has the same stench for me, and many other folks. Turning new friends into a 'downline' is not going to go over well...

OP - I think your biggest obstacle to this is the bad reputation of MLM. People will not listen no matter how good your arguments are.

That seems to be the answer mintyspilot. MLM has no credibility as a business model, therefore it doesn't matter what the product is, that is why it wouldn't work. That sentiment has been supported by many comments on this post and it answered my question. So I will pursue my quest in vain, but I'm learning along the way.

If you start trying to sell MLM to me while a guest on my boat you will be asked to leave

If I'm a guest on your boat and you start trying to sell me MLM, I'll leave

Do you really see parallels between the restaurant industry and MLM? That comparison seems like a stretch to me.

This is hardly a worthwhile discussion anyway- if your cruising turns into business trips, then your boat becomes your office (or your car), port calls become meetings, and acquaintances become employees or customers. That sounds too much like life as it is already for me. Why even bother cruising?

A good product will sell itself.

From personal experience any business model will work, some just require more work than others. If the MLM model requires that you overcome negative sentiment whether it is well informed or not, you will have to work very hard at it. Would it not be easier to sell beer to cruising yachties?

Every one of those Amway guys seem to end up with a garage full of overpriced soap. When they start up with the ********, I run only because I can't fly.

MLM does have a bad reputation because there are more losers then winners and because it gets sold as something other then a scheme where the key is to be one of the winners and not part of fleeced.

It's basic math.
