Paget Angle Sextant



Made by Hughes, London. Horizontal sextant for measuring the angle between two points. A sought after antique and still does exactly what it was designed to do. In rosewood box. US$200 Can$275.

Very interesting instrument. I've never seen one of those.


I presume the handle attaches to the base and one looks through the side of the instrument at an internal half mirror. Some adjustment knob brings the direct and reflected images together and the angle is read off of the dial on the top. Just like a "box sextant". Is that roughly correct?


I'm going to post a link to this thread on NavList. Maybe someone there would want it. If I had $200 to spare right now, I'd buy it.

Yes, that's right. It's a very interesting instrument. And a bit of history for me. A dear friend of mine was a ship's master for many years, carried freight almost anywhere in the world you can think of. When he retired, he gave me some of his instruments including the Paget.
