Re: Watching movies when cruising offshore

With 1tb micro sd cards being cheaper than 1tb SSD hd, is this a better alternative for storing shows?

In theory, yes. But you don't need an SSD to store multimedia and micro SD cards are mechanically fragile and, imo, easily misplaced if not stored permanently in a device.

Some devices also won't be able to read these high capacity micro sd cards.

Re: Watching movies when cruising offshore

We use an iPad and download movies from various streaming services before we travel, and the Ipad is useful as backup navigation.
Also my laptop will play DVDs.

A device for keeping birds out of your cockpit when hung from a string.

Re: Watching movies when cruising offshore

The fundamental trouble with iPads is that, due to the avariciousness of Apple, internal storage cannot be extended with the use of a cheap SD card. Apple have deliberately crippled the connectivity of the devices. Offering, in some instances, ludicrously overpriced work arounds.

If you really want to watch video on a small screen away from internet connectivity (to stream) then either a Windows 2 in 1, such as a Surface (the Surface Go is really cheap) or an Android tablet are much better bets. Even an Amazon Fire tablet has memory extension and they cost peanuts.

There are good reasons why Apple is losing market share.

There is a fix for the Apple file storage issue.

Really useful device. I bought one years ago and it has all kinds of uses, to include enable you to use sd cards with your IPad wirelessly

That will certainly work. As will a number of other options including, which might be better if you have a lot of media, a WiFi enabled hard disk caddy. In which you could also use an SSD. Not so much for the speed as the robustness.

However, all these are workarounds. One more bit of kit. One more device to power and keep powered. One more WiFi connection to swap in and out. One more cost overhead.

Surely easier just to break the Apple habit and come out of their walled garden into a more open world. For goodness sake, my mobile phone connects perfectly with USB-C -> HDMI to a screen or TV and can take a bigger capacity SD card than the device you mention.

Just heard about this movie, apparently worth seeing, so you have a an actual reason to watch a movie offshore:

Re: Watching movies when cruising offshore

I mostly use my Ipad Pro with the 12.9" screen. With Netflix you can download movies and shows (not all, but many). The typical file size for a movie is 1 or 2 GB, so my 128GB Ipad will hold more than I need.

Interestingly, when you travel in other countries, Netflix will have different content.

You might be interested in how your message, which in the event was interesting and not a trojan, came out on different devices:

1. On my mobile phone, where I read it first, there was just a long link. Which could have been to anything.
2. On my PC I was able to see a photo of the YouTube clip with a play button.

I think that the moral of the story, for all of us who are safety conscious, is to give written detail as to the nature of the link. Here the name of the film. We can then have some assurance that there is no danger.

Anyway, thanks, but the clip, as usual, really gives no idea as to the nature of the film. So I had better go and look it up!

I don't expect my phone to play or even display everything that's out there either. Sometimes videos are only visible in certain countries due to copyrights or other laws. The U.S. trailer in the link above is for the movie STYX. If you listen carefully near the end, you can hear that it involves a sailor coming across desperate refugees, at sea. I have not seen it, but hear that it is worth seeing.

I am afraid that you missed my core point: namely, that each of us put enough text with the message so that others can be confident that it is a safe link. Irrespective of the device.

40" LED 1080p Samsung TV and a MAC mini with HDMI into TV plus a 2TB hard drive with my iTunes library on. Draws about 80w and plays all my tunes throughout the boat via the Fusion Stereo and movies in the salon. iTunes is controllable via the remote app on iPad or iPhone for changing songs without having to turn on the TV or going into the salon.

ps: i hate being so tied into apple but once they got ya, your screwed!
