Re: Salon or Saloon ?

The proper pronunciation for this application is Saloon.....when pronounced as Salon it is just another example of American ignorance showing itself as pretentiousness.

Re: Salon or Saloon ?

Saloon (not pronounced "salon") is masculine where refreshments are served as on a boat/ship. Salon is feminine and is where nails and hair are done. So, do you have a "girlie" boat or a "manly" boat? So, you choose between salon and saloon.

Re: Salon or Saloon ?

Salon/Saloon on a boat usually doesn't go into actually application. It's for vessels big enough to have "state rooms" and seperate rooms for eating. Basically it is fancier and takes up less room on the drawings than writing "dinning area". My boat is too small/simple to have a Saloon, the cabin area is divided at the mast with head and storage forward and main cabin w/pull out double bunk, coffee table and iceboa/chart table, there is a partial bulkhead dividing the galley from the rest of the cabin.

No one actually uses the term unless there "Yacht" is so incredibly big the rooms need to be named and/or someone wants to try an make people think it is so big the rooms need to be named.
But the to answer the question there are various definitons for the word Saloon

Saloon:
(1) : a usually large public cabin on a ship (as for dining)
(2)
: the living area on a yacht
(3) :a room or place for general use for a specific purpose: a dining saloon on a ship.

In a search for Salon Nautical I came up with "Nautical Hair Salon" is located in Suisun City, Ca.

Don't conflate the saloon and the mess. Those can be housed in different cabins as well. Some saloons are dining saloons, but a saloon can be any common area where people congregate socially, as opposed to a "study."

Old thread I just stumbled across.... But, pronouced salon for the same reason gunwhale is pronounced gunnel. It's a mariner thing from old sailors several hundred years ago that will never change.

So, it's spelled saloon but pronounced salon.

Re: Salon or Saloon ?

Pronounced saloon , a salon is a gathering of intellectuals so certainly not applied to sailors ( insert chuckle here ). The Americans of bygone days did not like the association with the western saloons so it was pronounced salon . Of course I could be wrong havinf been in a saloon all day!

Opinions, anyone? Thanks!

Don't know for others but both are o.k.

In Croatian you say and write salon, pronounce vith O, salOn .
In English is saloon you write two O, pronounce with U, səˈluːn…(strange language).
That must be the reason that Anglo-Saxons are bad at learning foreign languages

Most of these mariner terms we currently use are from the old english. Here's Websters take on it when referreing to a saloon "on a vessel"... which is old english and properly pronounced salon. Pronounced saloon is an American term referring to a bar and has nothing to do with boats.

It's a saloon in either case. Whether or not it's on a boat will dictate it's pronounciation.

Re: Salon or Saloon ?

I once heard it this way,
If it's just seating and drinks it is a salon, if it has seating drinks and food it is a saloon.

Re: Salon or Saloon ?

This honestly feels like the "aluminium vs aluminum" debate. Here is the disambiguation breakdown from Wikipedia:

Salon may refer to:
  • Beauty salon: a venue for cosmetic treatments
  • Champagne Salon: a producer of sparkling wine
  • Drawing room: an architectural space in a home
  • Salon (gathering): a meeting for learning or enjoyment
  • Salon (Paris): a regular art exhibition

Saloon may refer to:
  • An alternative name for a bar
  • A South Asian or Cypriot term for a barber's shop
  • One of the bars in a traditional British public house, or pub
  • Saloon (automobile), a style of car body also known as a sedan
  • Saloon (band), an English Indie musical group
  • The centre room of a suite of state rooms, the drawing room
  • The officers' mess on a merchant vessel
  • A large social lounge on a passenger ship
  • Western saloon, a historical style of American bar
  • Saloon (album), by The Ongoing Concept
