It was "play with Photoshop" day today; check out the text and font on our new boat card

The picture is from 2007 and made with a P&S Canon.

Who needs a DSLR? I like my iphone camera. I just put my Canon up for auction on ebay and good riddance.

A photographer needs a DSLR. I also like my iPhone camera but it wn't much go beyond snapshots and social networks. I got away with the picture above because of it's small boat card print.
The picture was the easy part, the text was the harder part but 10 years ago, when we made our first boat cards, the Star Wars font was not available... now it is

I sold my Nikon D3 and a couple dozen lenses. Have more to sell. Will keep a body or two, and a couple lenses, because a camera phone will not do everything.

I have a Nikon D7000 and I leave it permanently set at 0.3 of a stop less. I play with exposure a fair bit, one of the great things I love with digital cameras is the unlimited number of shots that can be snapped to get just the right one .

Hey Lass,

What exposure mode is your standard? Also, do you notice much of a difference in brightness between your DSLR's screen and what you see on your computer monitor?

I have a D90 and a D700, and with both I am most pleased with the look of my images with -0.3 exposure compensation dialed in (Aperture Priority Mode). When I get them on my computer (I keep it color corrected with the Spyder 3) however, they are almost alway underexposed.

My monitor is dimmer than most that I see, this is a function of the color correction. The prints I have done from those files are spot on, but there is a huge difference between what I see on the back of the camera and what pops up on the monitor when I import my images.

Wondering if you have noticed this also. The third of a stop under in your post caught my attention.

Cheers

Tim

Hi Tim
I use the camera in P mode almost exclusively. I store the camera away set at 400 ASA, 1/3 of a stop less exposure, polaroid filter on. This is usually pretty close if I need to grab the camera quickly (just the filter needs rotating then). For most shots I am not in a hurry so I have time to adjust the ASA and shutter speed and aperture according to what I am shooting or what effect I want. I enjoy playing and never have the camera in auto mode .

The histogram is a really useful way of looking at exposure for general shots.

I use the screen very little as in bright sun it really doesn't give a great idea if the exposure is right (i have the opposite problem to you, the screen is dimmer and shots look underexposed when they are not). I usually can't be bothered putting reading specs on on see the screen well either so that doesn't help (and anyway being fuzzy and unable to see detail seems to give me a better idea of composition LOL). If I am uncertain I will bracket the aperture mode either side of -0.3. Sunset/sunrise shots are often a full stop off.

I really debated between the D7000 and 700. The weight issue was the concern and lighter won out in the end. I usually have the camera with me on treks ashore and these are usually 5-15 km walks and I find it is a PITA having the camera in my backpack, so the case is slung over one shoulder. Unless it is in my backpack I notice the weight after an hour or so even with the 7000 .

Re: Any Photographers with DSLR's Around ?

Just found this thread also, great shots people! Next week I'm off to Tanzania again, can't wait. Here are a couple of shots taken over the past decade, and none could have been taken with an iPhone. I shoot with a Canon 1DMkIII and 7D and these have been taken with in Namibia, Botswana and Kenya.

Re: Any Photographers with DSLR's Around ?

Some from the last trip to Botswana - amazing safari tracking the denning African Wild Dogs in the Okavango Delta. Some shots were also taken in the Waterberg, South Africa, one of my favourite areas.
