Thank you all and Zanshin, sorry for not making more detail, I sail now only in UK but intended to continue to the med (definitely keep away from San Deigo). The boat have only a 4hp outboard which make only 2knots. So I'm safe. Cheers

dingy - I'd say you are safe from getting a "violoation" ticket, but getting a battery-operated 3-way LED light is cheap and would perhaps help in making you safe from other night-time traffic.

The purpose of nav lights is not to avoid a citation and fine, but to help other vessels know of your position and course so that they can best avoid a collision with you. There has been a lot of thought put into the Colregs and following them is a good plan for survival. Have some consideration for the other mariner who doesn't get much info from a single white light...

Under UK regulations You have to follow the rules from Merchant Shipping Notice 1781

Rule 23

Power-driven vessels underway

(a) A power-driven vessel underway shall exhibit:

(i) a masthead light forward;

(ii) a second masthead light abaft of and higher than the forward one; except that a vessel of less than 50 metres in length shall not be obliged to exhibit such light but may do so;

(iii) sidelights;

(iv) a sternlight.

(d) (i) A power-driven vessel of less than 12 metres in length may in lieu of the lights prescribed in paragraph (a) of this Rule exhibit an all-round white light and sidelights;

(ii) a power-driven vessel of less than 7 metres in length whose maximum speed does not exceed 7 knots may in lieu of the lights prescribed in paragraph (a) of this Rule exhibit an all-round white light and shall, if practicable, also exhibit sidelights;
