Were your numbers glassed over or covered with epoxy like some of the others, though?

I still think that's the best/easiest idea, since the numbers are already there and in a good location. Also would probably be cheaper and less bulky than making a sign, and looks nicer than if I were to etch it right into the glass.

I epoxy glued acrylic letters. The idea is is if they remove the lettering it has to be obvious. Even routed letters can be routed over, but it would show. You can always destroy something done but if it would leave a trace that it used to be there it's considered OK even if you can't read the numbers removed. It really is impossible to make it so they can't be removed. It does mean you couldn't change them as the USCG was boarding the boat too.

Had teak plaque carved and mounted on bulkhead over settee ...mounted with
silicone...should have been more permanent.

Mine is a plastic engraved plate with glass cloth epoxied over. Its ugly, fortunately it is in a place that is not real conspicuous.

There was a layer of painted on epoxy resin, but that wasn't enough for the Coasties.
It was a long time ago, and the fix wasn't difficult. I used a Dremel mototool.
