European Country Requirements

We are about to set out cruising around the Med after taking part in the EMYR 2010

Each country around the Med has its own culture, charm and culture-however that also means each country also has its own regulations for yachties- for example Greece requires that insurance certificates are in Greek- Does anyone know of a definitive list of requirements for these countries- or does anybody have details of specific countries?

Bryan, check out Jimmy Cornel's website at Noonsite: The global site for cruising sailors. They have a tab listing for all the countries they are reporting on. You will be able to find out the entry/exit requirements as well as ports of entry/exit for those countries you wish to visit.

You don't need to worry about this during the EMYR as they take care of it for you. We have been on 2 EMYRs in 2007 and last year in 2009. We will probably do it again if we are in that part of the Med in a couple of years.

tremendous source of info. We are looking forward to the EMYR, just the two of us aboard, so the overnights may be a bit of a challenge.
Are you in Marmaris yacht Marin? We may well stay there winter 2010-11, - Do you have any recommendations?

Hi there - currently in Suffolk so not far away.

We have found that our insurance company (GJW) cheerfully and for free translate the insurance certificate into any language we've asked for (so far Spanish, Portuguese, Italian and French). So just ask your insurers and get it done and then you have it.

Mind you - in Italy, which does require you to have it translated, we have failed to get anyone to take the slightest interest in looking at it, even in the marina where we are spending (not enough of) the winter.

Don't fret about the overnights. While there are a total of about nine, you have plenty of time to rest before and after each one. Most boats depart the previous marina in the afternoon and arrival is scheduled around the next mid-day. Usually there is nothing scheduled that first night, maybe a cocktail party so you have plenty of time to catch up on any missed sleep. We were two, and each pulled a 4 hour shift. The nights are beautiful with plenty of stars.

We are currently at Yat Marine, on land. We'll return to the boat at end of March and start out in April sometime heading through Greece toward Croatia. YM is a good marina and big, over 2000 boats winter over, evenly on land and in water. During the winter is doesn't get freezy, but it will be around 10 C, with lots of rain. They are located on a peninsula about 15 km from the town, but they run a free ferry twice a day. There are inexpensive micro-buses that run twice an hour. There are over fifty boats that winter over as a community at YM as well as a community of winter cruisers at Netsel Marina.

hi Gary,
I'm not fretting, just looking forward to it! I guess you are back in the UK for the winter? we've been back here for a couple of years, but have lived in Turkey (Yalikavak, near Bodrum) for a couple of years prior to that. Boat has been out on charter to pay its keep, but this year we are off sailing for goood (or bad) I'm currently buying most of the stuff needed to convert her to liveaboard capability, problem will then be how do I get this onto an Onur air flight without excess baggage? Turkish bribery springs to mind! It would be good to meet up should our paths be within a few nautical cables, where will you be cruising in 2010?

Hi roaring girl, that's a good idea-I'm with pantaneius (or something like that) so I'll ask them to give me a translation into each country I'm likely to visit. Where abouts in Suffolk are you? What a lovely county- the best waterside pubs in the uk!
