Re: Entry Reg's n Rules

I go through customs at least twice a year with a class of 16 college students. You can't imagine how fun that can be if someone smarts off.

Before we get to the airport, I brief them all on the importance of answering questions with "sir." or "ma'am." On the other end, it's "señior" or "señiora."

Makes a huge difference.

Re: Entry Reg's n Rules

This book is pretty interesting:

Arrest-Proof Yourself: An Ex-Cop Reveals How Easy It Is for Anyone to Get Arrested, How Even a Single Arrest Could Ruin Your Life, and What to Do If the Police Get in Your Face

It's written for poor people who live in bad neighborhoods and tend to have a lot of cops around. Driving by their houses, stopping them on the street to ask them questions, and etc. And the thesis is that an arrest gets entered into the computer system and negatively impacts your life, so this is a sort of how-to book for people to be polite, avoid trouble, talk as little as possible, and etc.

Before I read it I did not realize that a simple arrest, with no charges or conviction, can be so negative.

I'm in and on the boat....
Finally got cleared in after the Owner sent me a mail with the name, contact number etc of an officer in Nth Palm Beach village who could confirm his existance and also verification from the Marina that the boat exists...
Now I can understand why a Mexican/Phillipino/Indian/African etc might want to enter the US and stay on illegally....
But why the hell they would think a Brit/West European would want to do so is totally beyond me.... we enjoy a nightlife...
south of Virginia everyones gone home to bed by 9-30pm and everythings closed or closing...
definitely not a place for civilised people who enjoy socialising and partying...
Never seen so many wrinkles in one place before...
Anyway... we sail from Nth Palm Beach Marina tomorrow lunchtime (EST) after topping up with 600gals of deisel.... next stop Cape Town...

An arrest is not the same as a conviction. So it would be wrong for someone to be denied a job /opportunity/consideration without a conviction.
But other than that is GREAT article. You broke the law, got convicted and now have a price to pay. Thanks for posting.

And if so many job applicants didn't lie on their applications so much money wouldn't be wasted in uncovering their lies. Over 95% from my personal experience.

We will not hire anyone with more than the lowest 2 classes of misdemeanors and # also is taken into account. Speeding ticket won't cost you your job but a DUI will for min 10 years. Our customers do not want convicted felons of any type in their homes and that is their lawful personal choice.
Do you want someone with single or multiple sexual convictions in your home with your young kids or wife??? Do your schools???
Do you want someone with 26 petty burglary convictions working at your widowed mother-in-laws multimillion dollar home or even 75k home???
You broke the law, got caught and convicted so quit whining, man up and pay the price. Had 34 companies and a couple employees incl my brother had to be fired by me for breaking the rules. Domestic Battery on his former wife became a sex crime. Fired them/him but went out and opened 3 new companies who only do commercial work and never work in people's homes and I put those employees in as presidents of those companies under different corp. names with a no residential work/felons policy. We have a no felons policy legally in the other 34 co and have twice been sued by states but won both cases. Have almost 40 years of history and over 130k letters thanking us from customers who feel safe with our drug testing and no felon’s policy thus becoming repeat customers. Give people what they want and they will pay extra for it. Our people are also paid min $1 hr more than the union rate in their area as we expect/demand more from them. (They are all also owners. ESOP's)
That is our written and published rules and policy like Immigration has Rules and Policy. Problem is most have no idea what all the rules are or how to interrupt them (shows some govts lack of training esp. USA) and most importantly blatantly poor customer service skills if at all. IMHO

cheers,
John
Sounds good.

If I need a job do you mind if I PM you to see where I might fit?

25%? I wonder what the percentage in Australia is .

In the UK we have the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act - from memory, for run of the mill convictions after 7 years the conviction is "spent" meaning doesn't have to be disclosed (and won't be disclosed on any criminal records checks to 3rd parties - albeit probably still on record with da PoPo somewhere).

I think that is a fair enough system - the alternative is to trap folks in the Freemarketeer end of the economy, not to say that you need (nor gain) any convictions for doing that .

Although not presently employing anyone, I have no problem with employing criminals. The only category I think long and hard about are those with Religous convictions .

Re: Entry Reg's n Rules

We have had quite a few kiwi criminals moving to Australia when they could not continue crime in NZ.

Appears criminal history is not shared fully between juristrictions

Most recent high profile case was the case of a Health department official who absconded with some $12 mill from Queensland Health Department.

He was also posing as a Tahiatian prince living an over the top life style throwing exclusive parties, gucci suits and all the toys. (cars, luxury flats, cars etc)

All despite his criminal history in NZ.

Most Kiwi's are great

Re: Entry Reg's n Rules

Everyone has been hyper about one-way tickets, particularly if they are paid for in cash at the last minute, because apparently that was the modus operandi of some of the 9/11 folks. By the way, different countries have their own issues at customs and immigration. I was waiting in line to board a flight in Amsterdam (the Netherlands) once when two burly guards wearing sidearms just marched up to the line unannounced and literally carried away a guy in line right next to me who was shouting and protesting in English--looked like an ordinary tourist to me. I've been in Heathrow in London during a security scare when the police were waving around automatic weapons at the ready as they surveyed the crowd, and they were making anyone who looked Middle Eastern unpack their belongings and spread them out down to every sock and piece of underwear. I've had the police there go through the dirty underwear in my luggage when arriving on the ferry. Crossing in and out of Canada I've had my car searched. In Panama I've been delayed all day until just after closing time so everyone could charge me for overtime for entering. Same in the Bahamas. In Key West they wouldn't let me into the Customs office with a small cell phone or a digital camera--had to leave those outside with someone. In any case, just saying that borders can be nasty everywhere if you catch the wrong person on the wrong day.
