What Size Stuffing Hose?

Just pulled my stuffing box and it turns out my replacement hose is too big, so I need another one.

I measured my stuffing box barb and got a hair over 1 5/8 on the neck and 1 3/4 on the rim. See pictures to see if this makes sense.

I really want to replace with a Buck Algonquin hose. However they seem to only come in 1 1/2 and 1 3/4 (got the 2 inch and it is way to big).

I figured a 1 5/8 would be the perfect fit, but it isn't an option.

Can I make the 1 1/2 work with some heat? Or will the 1 3/4 work with some hose clamps even if the neck is slightly smaller? Or do I give up and find one that fits better? Suggestions for a high quality alternative is appreciated!

I considered replacing the box itself, but figure that doesn't help where the hose meets the boat. I haven't measured that part yet, but I assume it is 1 5/8.

Re: What Size Stuffing Hose?

Word of advice... take extra care when replacing that hose. I had a Halberg Rassy that needed the hose replaced and I found myself in the same situation where the measurments were between sizes. I went with the closest size and double clamped as was originally installed. About 15 operating hours later the stuffing tube spun off and there was some exciting crisis response work to stop water from coming in the shaft tube while under sail. Come to find out later that the hose was a metric size (Halberg Rassy built in Europe) Duh... who would have thought.

eggs, you're in NYC, right? The has to be a competent chandlery near where you live that could look at your issue. Take the box with you and ask. It might cost a few more $$ to buy their algonquin hose than on the internet, but you'll get the right size. I'd bet most boatyard guys would do it for a six pack. That's what I'd do. Good luck.
