It sounds more and more like it’s in pretty good shape and not very big. Again if it’s just scratched in the varnish I’d give it a block sanding with 180 or 220 to get a mechanical bond and recoat, wouldn’t even break out power tools.

Its a mix, much if it is pretty good, some high traffic areas are worn off to bare wood.

There is a hand (non-electrical) tool called a "scraping hook", very commonly used in the maintenance of wooden boats, and another, a cabinet makers tool, called simply a "scraper". Those would be my choices given that teak and mastic are of totally different hardnesses.

The cabinet makers scraper is used for prepping for french-polishing furniture and will give you a very excellent finish.

Once you prep the wood what varnish/finish will you use over the existing sole? How will you get it to adhere to the remaining existing finish? following the thread as I have a sole that needs to be refinished too.

I havent chosen a specific varnish yet, but likely a polyurethane because its a high traffic area. If the old varnish is well adhered to the wood and sanded then the new should adhere to it well.

That teak looks to be in really nice condition. I would just use the 3M Sanding pads, and maybe some sand paper in spots if required.

Then clean it well and varnish. Just did my cabin sole that way and it looks great.

That pic is from when it was new, just to show the pattern.

The teak is in generally good shape now, some dark spots in galley, but othewise OK. Vanish is shot in high traffic areas though.

I used Varathane on a couple boats after the guy that did the high school basketball court turned me on to it. It's great for floors. Beware some Marine varnishes are fairly soft. Not all but some.

Its been so long that I forgot the product we used in 2004, held up great, but now its time to redo...next thing to research.
