I went up to Annapolis to look at a 1968 C&C Redwing 30. My plan was possibly to buy it and sail it down to Fl. to resell it, but that changed when I got a look at her. She was in rough shape with little to bad maintenance performed. She had no goodies like electronics or anything electrical working. Well I could go on with all the things wrong, but I will skip that and just say I had a desire to restore her. As the French say, "When it comes to love don't count the cost."
So I have started. I will be asking many questions here I am sure, but for now thought I would share some pictures of two old gals going for a 500 mile ride.

PS. Lost a trailer wheel in the dark on the trip. All 8 lug nuts snapped. Then the next day after fixing up the hub with 8 new not quite right lugs I pulled into a gas station only to have a small electrical fire in the truck. Good times. Good times.

I forgot to mention. I have been keeping an eye on the classifieds ads, but if any of you have boat parts. I need everything!
Another thought the boat and truck's combined age is 81. They just don't build em like they used to.

Okay first question.
What is it? I cannot see from the inside because of the floor boards. I can touch what feels like a small piece of metal maybe a quarter inch in diameter. Probably the center bit.
This does not appear to be from a thru hull since nothing is running to or near it.
Any ideas?

Looks like a drain plug to me as well. Unusual, but could be intended - boat stored ashore for long periods and known to fill with water (melting snow?) and an answer to frozen water in the bilges.........or could simply be a bodge to fill a vacant thru hull using whatever was to hand - especially if no access from the inside to make a proper fix to blank off easy.

An outside chance that could be the drain for an inbuilt water (or fuel?) tank, but the design seems odd (nothing to snag would make more sense) - FWIW, I have a couple of drains (flush design) in my bilge keels which are also water tanks! (very unusual is that!).

Follow up question. What should I do with it? I am not crazy about the idea of leaving it as is. The smeared caulk around it does not inspire confidence.
I am not going for a perfect hull this go round (time constraints ), but I will be stripping and barrier coating the bottom.
So I am thinking pull this off. See what i can see. Patch with fiberglass, and fill it.

For the curious. Here is what I found. So mystery solved.
Which brings up the mystery of why? I know this is not factory since all the thru hulls were flush. The only thing close to this hole is the bilge pump. (I can see it now from the inside. It blended in before.) I am wondering if someone tried to plumb the bilge bump through a thru hull 2 1/2 feet below the water line. Guess that didn't work out so well.
The glass is about an inch thick here. I was planning on starting from the outside put a small layer of cloth over the hole followed by a larger layer of cloth. Then from the inside filling up the hole with resin and small bits of cloth followed up with a layer of cloth over the filled up hole. Good enough?

I suspect a gear board plug to drain water when putting the vessel on the hard for winter months. I installed one at the bottom of my keel for the same reason except that it is flush mounted.

I'm sure you are right, but it wasn't well done. The plug was at least 7 in. from the bottom of the bilge. Far enough up that it was hard to see from the inside.
Hopefully after refurbishing there will be no more leaks and no need for it.
