Interesting that when TBT paints were banned in Britain and Europe a lot of cut price paint was available in the southern hemisphere. So much for corporate responsibility. The bigger the fine the better.

Obviously it has been a long time since you have bought TBT paint in those areas it is still allowed.

Nothing cut price about it at all.

The real tragedy is we are all paying big dollars for useless bottom paint that does nothing. The winning paint in the last Practical Sailor test rated "poor" for performance. No grandfather period to allow time for new formulas. No thought of the expense that boat owners will encounter scrubbing bottoms every month. My Micron job done a year ago has been scrubbed six times because I couldn't afford a monthly payout. This whole thing fail my smell test...it stinks. I've kept a boat at dock or in a marina for all my adult life and never failed to complain about seaweed growth fouling props. If the EPA was correct there would be barren waste lands under our boats.....and this isn't the case. This is extreme tree (kelp) hugging and should be reversed. Rubio has a boat doesn't he?

I'm going out on a limb here but I'm guessing the pollution from all of our combined vessels pales in comparison to the combined pollution from industrial waste, fertilisers, and yard products, etc,, I can remember when the Potomac river wasn't safe to swim in or eat fish from for years! and I'm not that old. That sure as heck wasn't from bottom paint,

Riddle me this, what does commercial shipping favor for anti fouling and how many foreign flagged ships currently in U.S. waters have their bottoms painted outside of this country, where the same rules do not apply? All of them?

Seems to me like a single large ship might have more bottom paint than a large marina full of pleasure craft.

TBT has been banned worldwide for many years. Now, copper has begun getting banned in some locals. TBT I believe was very bad for the food chain. Maybe copper should stay I assume that's what you mean by phaseout. TBT has been gone in U.S. Market legally for over 20 years.

I think Rubio likes to catch fish with that boat he's in big debt for. Maybe his Superpac can pay it off for him after he loses.

Newark Bay is permanently closed to crabbing due to high levels of PCB's and Dioxins. Guess it wasn't such a good idea to dump all that stuff from the factory that made Agent Orange into the Passaic River after all.

Commercial shipping use the same copper-based paints available to you and me. Either that or they use non-toxic, foul-release coatings. And while it is true that a container ship or tanker will have a significant painted wetted surface, the difference is that unlike pleasure craft, those vessels do not stay congregated in marinas for most of their lives, leaching copper into those small, poorly flushed basins, 24/7/365.
