Today was spent trying to finish stripping the mast. The winches and spreaders are being a bit difficult. Letting them soak tonight with the PB Blaster, then tomorrow they meet the torch.

Mast work is going well. It is a bit tedious though. What's the saying about aluminum and stainless steel fasteners?

Managed to remove 1.5 winches on my own. I had to bring in the big guns to help with the rest (maybe I was the help for the next few hours). With a combination of heat, strength, and brute force we were able to get the winches off. I also started drilling out the rivets on the halyard exit covers.

Steve and Andrew at SSMR were the absolute best. These guys are easily the most knowledgeable riggers and sailors that I have ever met. I would spend 30-40 minutes on a bolt and they would get a few minutes of downtime and jump right in and I would be moved on to the next bolt.

Pulling the tracks off of the mast and boom were almost as fun as removing the winches. Most of the rivets came out OK, but the combo of 4-5 rusted steel and stainless steal lag screw torqued in there were a bit of a pain. They came out after about a half a day of drilling.

So the mast is stripped and ready to paint. I spoke to the yard and decided to refrain from doing the mast paint. I just started a new school program and am feeling the pain of full time work, school, and the Compass. They are giving me a good deal to paint the mast. At the moment they are waiting on warm weather.

I have a few projects on the boat for the next couple weeks.

Getting the anchor to fit all the way
Source my running rigging
Source the lights and antenna
Wash and wax the hull

Maybe you have already told us but, are you going to put the whinches in the same place? Was just wondering,if not why? good luck ..

Yeah the winches are all going back in the same places. Trying to keep it as simple as possible. LOL.

This also may already have been mentioned, but what will you paint the mast & boom with? Awlgrip? From what I've read, it's critical to get the prep right when it comes to painting aluminum spars.

Very interested in this phase of your restoration. I have a similar-sized boat with probably similar-sized spars, and I know this project is on its way for me too!
