Post mold gel-coat

St Francis builds their hulls without gel-coat, they perform a post mold gel-coat. Is this industry standard, better or worse and who else does this?

Only way I knew it's done is the Gelcoat is sprayed into the mold first, didn't know anyone put on the Gelcoat after the hull comes out of the mold.
I assume there is some advantage of doing it that way?

The only post fabrication gel coat I have ever seen applied was to repair dings and scratches. I won't say you couldn't re-gal coat a boat, but painting it usually much preferred.

I had a deck re-gelled once. So it's definitely possible, but has to be compounded /polished after spraying.
I have no idea why a company wouldn't put it in the mold though...

when . gelcoat is sprayed in the mold and then fiber glass is laminated on top, there is a chemical bond between two. When you gel coat is sprayed on top of the fiberglass there is only a mechanical bond, I believe this is far inferior method. probably epoxy paint would be better

Yea, the quotes we got to re-gel coat our boat (Herrington Harbor two years ago) was less than painting, the warranty was longer, and they said it's much more durable than paint.

I did not know that and I owned one. Mine was 2 part polyurethane paint on the hulls and in mold gel-coat everywhere else. When did they start doing it that way?
