Dhow Update, Splash Day

Last Saturday I finally got the Dhow launched.
A couple days of commissioning and sorting out some ground tackle, chow fuel and water and she was ready to go.
I hired a captain and some of his guys and put one of my guys with it and sent them on their way.
With any luck they should make the trip from Mukallah to the port of Mocha (famous for exporting coffee) in two or three days.
Given the risk of pirates I decided not to join them.
I'll drive down to Mocha Saturday to check on the progress of the Jetty....hopfully the dhow will be there.

It was a fishing dhow that I had modified to carry cargo.
I have a small construction project on the Island of Mayun (at the mouth of the Red Sea) I need it to transport the materials including a 50 meter high radar tower and various types of electronics.
When I'm done with the project I'll either try and sell it or use it to support a small hotel we have on the island of Socotra.
The pictures show the before and after....the new hold is about 20ft long.

James,
Just looked for Island of Mayun on Google Earth. Gave me Perim Island, at the mouth of the Red Sea. Same place?
I found Socotra ok.

From where I'm looking you're working quite happily in the heart of pirate territory! Can this be right? Do they all work for you???

What is your take on the Somali/Yemeni pirate situation?

Vic

Here we spell it Mayun...but if you want to find it on a search Spell it Mayyun.

The Dhow looks good from far away, but with a couple small exceptions is dog rough.

When I decided to get it, I had just a couple months before I needed to have it working....or so I thought.
So I bought one that had been almost completed....and as with all the boats around these parts, the construction was "local fisherman standard" I.e. ROUGH
As it turned out there were some major delays for this and another site that were beyond my control.
Had I known it would take this long I would have looked at some other options.

Yes this is in a bad place...once you get around the point its not that bad because there are some security "presence" intermittently.
As far as my general opinion on the Pirate situation...I'll have to claim the Fifth

Yeah ...thats the boom and mast I made.
