'Crackling' Sound from Hull

Hi all,

I bought a sail boat about 9 mths ago, had it antifouled and put in the water....and could hear a constant "crackling" sound from the hull below the water line. It seemed to stop after about 3 months.

Took the boat out of the water recently for a couple of days to put a through hull in....and as soon as it was back in the water the crackling sound started again.

Appreciate any comments on what the cause of this sound is?

Fiberglass termites. It's a huge problem.

Actually it's little shrimp, or some other marine life. Very common.

Pistol shrimp? The topic arises here sometimes.

The termite that eats fiberglass is called a polyestermite. Very tenacious.

Keep you awake at nights even when you are away from the boat...

Had those, I liked them better than the damned otters breaking razor clams on the bottom of my boat every night starting at 11:00 and going on until 3:00am.
