CLR ?

We had to replace the chain that connects the wheel to the rudder. To do this we had to replace it with motorcycle chain and shorten it with a grinder. It left tiny shreds all over my deck. I've cleaned it and cleaned it and cleaned it with a rust stain remover. Each time it gets better, but Im nearly out of the rust remover and where I'm at there are no real boat supplies to be had....

So Im looking for a "readily available" alternative. I looked at CLR, it says dont use on plastics. It makes no mention of fiberglass or gel coat.... any ideas? is CLR too harsh or will damage the gel coat?

Oxalic acid - available at any hardware or home goods store. It is often sold as a wood bleach. Make a paste with water and apply it to the rust stains. If the stains are extensive, make a saturated solution in warm water, spread it around the deck and let it sit.

Thanks I will try that. The cleaner I have now says "contains oxyalic acid". I never thought I might obtain it in some other form... I'll check the hardware stores.

When I did the same thing, at least it was on the swim platform, after hours of scrubbing, I put normal boat polish on a scrubbing bbrush and that seemed to get into the nonskid surface better.

I never saw on the boat no more
