Re: Cape Dory28 re-power

It depends on how much work you’ll do yourself, labor rate for the mechanic, what else you might need or have done at the same time, if any modifications will need to be done, etc.

We put a new Beta 16 in our Bristol 29.9 last winter and the engine alone was over $9,300. We were ok with it because this is our last boat and we knew we would be cruising full-time on her. If this isn’t your last boat, you may want to keep looking for a different one.

Try posting your question on the Cape Dory forum. Lots of owners have repowered over the years. Including me, back in ‘07.

Re: Cape Dory28 re-power

From a financial standpoint, much better to buy a boat that already has a newer engine. Nothing at all special about Cape Dorys excepting the fairly unique look.

Re: Cape Dory28 re-power

Design and build quality very robust, suitable for upfitting for long passages, more consistently across the marque than most.

Comfortable sailing in a wide range of conditions, tracks great, stiff when others need to start reefing, more seakindly motion even in big waves, surprisingly good in light air.

So they say. . .

But yes, when shopping a well, running engine is worth as much as the rest put together.

Re: Cape Dory28 re-power

Depends on who's doing the install. I owned one, and coveted the Beta 28, but my volvo md2b never died......

Beta 28 costs roughly $12k shopping around.

roughly 5K in labor (50-60 hours)

in addition to installation, you will need:

New shaft (very unlikely the old one will be proper length
new dripless (may as well replace the ancient packing gland)
New water muffler and hose
new prop
Cutlass bearing

Scrub down and repaint the engine compartment while the engine is out
